Come morning, Minho and Thomas finally return from the Maze. Newt welcomes them excitedly, but the Runners have no new findings to share with him. Newt lets them know that last night the Grievers took a boy named Adam.

Minho is super frustrated. He thinks that there’s no exit from the Maze; in fact, he’s ready to give up. Now, more than ever, Thomas realizes that they must rely on the map’s code.

Thomas makes his way to the Homestead’s basement to see what the map code has revealed. He feels a little blue when Teresa doesn’t show the faint bit of giddiness to see him.

Newt dismisses the boys who were sent to help break the code. Then, Teresa reveals the words that they figured out: float, catch, bleed, death stiff, and push. She lets him know that the words are revealed in that very order by the Maze. Thomas is a bit disappointed at how ambiguous the code is.

Suddenly, though, Thomas has an idea that he feels he must pursue. He wants to go through the Changing so he can better remember things.
