 INSURGENT -- CHARACTERS
Tori Wu.
Tori is a member of the Dauntless who aids Beatrice several times in Divergent. She first helps her when she gives Beatrice the aptitude test which will determine which faction Beatrice will be best suited for. The aptitude test reveals that Beatrice is Divergent. Tori is kind and wise enough to know what Divergence means, so she hides the real results from those in charge. Also, in Divergent Beatrice visits Tori at the tattoo shop for tattoos and for answers behind the secrets of Divergence. In Insurgent Tori takes a more crucial role. She pretends she is a Dauntless traitor so she can spy on the Erudite. Later, she is one of three people who are chosen to become the new Dauntless leaders. As leader, she plans to carry out an attack on the Erudites with the help of some Abnegation and the factionless.

Peter.
Peter is a Dauntless initiate who originally came from Candor. In Divergent he demonstrates a short fuse as he goes through the initiation process. In Insurgent he initially sides with Tris and her friends. He ventures with them to the Amity headquarters where tension is high between him and Tris. During an attack at the Amity headquarters by the Erudites, Tris saves Peter from a bullet. Later, Peter sides with the Erudites and leaves Tris’ group. What seems like an act of betrayal turns out to be anything but. He gains the trust of the Erudites and helps Tris escape when she ventures into the Erudite headquarters.

Evelyn Eaton.
Evelyn is Tobias’ mother. Tris thought that Evelyn had passed away. However, Tris learns that Evelyn cheated on Marcus. As a result of her affair, Evelyn was forced to leave the Abnegation and join the factionless. Her “death” was no more than a cover-up. When she left Abnegation, Evelyn assumed Tobias would be in good hands with his father. She was, of course, wrong. While a part of the factionless, Evelyn became their leader. Later, Evelyn and her factionless become allies with both the Dauntless and the Abnegation. Together, they plan to bring down the Erudites.

Edward.
In Divergent Edward was a Dauntless initiate who was forced out of the initiation process by Peter. As a result of an eye injury that Peter gave him, Edward was forced to become factionless. In Insurgent Edward helps Evelyn, the factionless leader. Edward is a bit unsteady in the head.

Uriah.
Uriah is a Dauntless member who has known Tris since her initiation. In Insurgent Tobias and Tris are reacquainted with Uriah at the Candor headquarters. During an attack by Dauntless traitors at the Candor headquarters, Tris learns that Uriah is also Divergent. Throughout the book, Uriah has a romantic relationship with Marlene. This relationship ends, though, with Marlene’s death.

Marlene.
Marlene is a Dauntless member who Tris first meets during the Dauntless initiation. She becomes good friends with Tris and she forms a relationship with Uriah. Later, when the Dauntless return to their headquarters, Marlene is subjected to an Erudite serum. The serum allows Jeanine to control Marlene’s actions. While being controlled by Jeanine, Marlene is forced to jump off of the top of Dauntless headquarters. Tris had the opportunity to save Marlene from jumping, but instead she chose to save Hector. The jump from the top of the building costs Marlene her life.

Lynn.
Lynn is a Dauntless member who also meets Tris during Dauntless initiation. In Insurgent Tris is reacquainted with Lynn at the Candor headquarters. At the Candor compound, Lynn helps Tris get situated by forcing her younger brother, Hector, to give up his bed for her. Later, Lynn joins Tris and a group of Dauntless when they spy on a meeting between Jack Kang (the Candor leader) and Max (an Erudite representative). Jack hopes to negotiate with the Erudite during the meeting. Things go very sour during the meeting when Lynn shoots Max from a distance. Her shot begins a gun fight. During the gun fight, Lynn’s older sister Shauna is shot and paralyzed from the waist down. Later, when the Erudite compound is attacked by the Dauntless, Abnegation, and factionless, Lynn also participates on the raid. She, unfortunately, doesn’t come out alive.

Shauna.
Shauna is a Dauntless who is Lynn’s older sister. She doesn’t have much faith in Divergents. She, in fact, believes the negative slander about Divergents, such as the idea that they are not loyal since they don’t stand for any one faction. During the spy-outing in which Tris and her friends watch Jack Kang meet up with Max, Shauna is unfortunately shot and left paralyzed.

Zeke.
Zeke is a Dauntless member, Uriah’s older brother, and a friend of Tobias. He poses as a Dauntless traitor along with Tori so that they can spy on the Erudite. When their spying mission is found out, they escape to the Candor headquarters where they are reacquainted with their old Dauntless friends. Zeke has a relationship with Shauna and he stands by her after she is paralyzed.

Jack Kang.
Jack Kang is the leader of the Candor and a fierce believer in honesty. He houses the loyal Dauntless after the first Erudite attack on the Abnegation. Later, he believes he must give into Erudite demands since his faction is defenseless against the Erudites. Little does he know that the Candors will eventually be put under a mind-control serum to help protect the Erudite headquarters.

Cara.
Although Cara is a minor character, she has a big impact on the plot of the story. Cara is an Erudite and Will’s sister. When the Erudites launch a surprise attack on the Candor compound, Cara goes along with them. She, however, betrays her people and runs upstairs to warn some loyal Dauntless about the ongoing attack at the compound. The Erudite sneak attack is stopped because these loyal Dauntless are able to fight back. Cara very much saves the loyal Dauntless at the Candor headquarters.

Eric.
Eric is a Dauntless leader who is an antagonist to Tobias. Tobias and Eric competed with each other when they both were initiates. Eventually, he rose to power in the Dauntless faction. In Divergent Eric helped the Erudites undergo their plan against the Abnegation. In Insurgent Eric continues to help the Erudites by doing their bidding. He leads a group of Dauntless traitors. He is successful for only a short time.

Natalie Prior.
Natalie is Beatrice’s mother. Before joining Abnegation, she was from the Dauntless faction. In Divergent she proved to be a caring and compassionate mother who sacrificed herself for Tris. Although Natalie is no longer around in Insurgent, she still plays as a key motivator and role-model for Tris.

Andrew Prior.
Andrew is Beatrice’s father. In Divergent he helped run the government as a member of the Abnegation council. Towards the end of Divergent he sacrificed himself to save Tris and to help her stop the Erudite’s mind-control simulation. While he is deceased and not present in Insurgent, his example and his sacrifice serves as a great motivating factor for Tris.

Will.
Like Natalie Prior and Andrew Prior, Will died in Divergent, but his death nevertheless impacts Tris in Insurgent. In Divergent Will worked alongside Beatrice as they went through the Dauntless initiation. He originally was from the Erudite faction. He was an overall good guy who developed a relationship with Christina. In Divergent when the Erudite took over the Dauntless soldiers, Will nearly killed Tris with a gun. Tris, though, shot first and killed Will dead. In Insurgent Tris keeps the fact that she killed Will hidden for a long while. When the truth of Will’s death is revealed, a few of Tris’ friendships are greatly impacted.

Beatrice (Tris) Prior.
Beatrice is the main character. She was born into the Abnegation faction. She chose to leave her family to join the Dauntless faction. As a Dauntless, she goes by the name “Tris.” Although Tris was born Abnegation and later joined Dauntless, she is actually a rare breed of person called Divergent. While people usually show characteristics that belong to only one faction, Tris’ Divergence allows her to demonstrate characteristics of multiple factions. Her uniqueness puts her in an interesting spot. Initially, in Divergent she must keep her Divergence a secret since it would otherwise label her as an outcast and get her in trouble. In Insurgent with the faction system beginning to crumble, Tris’ Divergence becomes a well-known fact. Likewise, she becomes a subject of interest for the menacing Erudite faction.

Tobias (Four) Eaton.
Tobias is a Dauntless member who is in charge of training new initiates in Divergent. He obtained the nickname “Four” after it was revealed that he only has four fears. It’s later uncovered that Tobias was originally an Abnegation and his father is Marcus Eaton. Like Tris, he too is Divergent. He develops a romantic relationship with Beatrice that has its ups and downs in Insurgent.

Marcus Eaton.
Marcus is a former Abnegation council member, an old friend to Andrew Prior, and Tobias’ father. He was a terrible father and Tobias still carries much baggage because of him. Tris has her doubts on how selfless of an Abnegation Marcus really is. Marcus carries a secret with him. The Abnegation were about to reveal this secret to everybody before the Erudite attack. In Insurgent Tris must decide if she trusts Marcus enough to seek out the truth behind this secret.

Jeannine Matthews.
Jeannine is the person in charge of the Erudites. She is in a thirst for power. In Divergent she goes as far as to creating a serum that is able to control the powerful Dauntless soldiers. With an army under her control, she is able to declare war on the Abnegation. She makes it seem as if she intends to bring down Abnegation so that other factions can have a voice in the government. In Insurgent it is eventually made clear that she also attacked the Abnegation to stop them from delivering news that would have changed the reality of all the factions’ existence. Jeannine is also interested in learning more about the Divergents. Jeannine is cunning, heartless, and incredibly power-driven. She, eventually, meets her match in Tori Wu.

Johanna Reyes.
If the Amity had a true leader, then they would be led by Johanna. The Amity live by the rules of a true democracy where all people have an equal say, so Johanna simply has the title of speaker for the Amity. Originally from Candor, Johanna is still interested in the truth. She unsuccessfully tries to get the truth out of Marcus. She knows that the Abnegation were harbingers of a secret, but Marcus doesn’t make that secret public knowledge. Later, when Tris unveils the plan to attack the Erudites, Johanna leaves her position as speaker so that she can lead a group of Amity in an attempt to stop the conflict.

Christina.
Christina meets Beatrice when they both work to become Dauntless members during the initiation period. She is originally Candor. Beatrice develops a close friendship with her. In Insurgent their friendship is tested when Christina learns that Tris killed Will. It takes her a long while before she warms up to Tris again.

Caleb Prior.
Caleb is Beatrice’s brother. In Divergent, during the Choosing Ceremony, he was expected to stay with the Abnegation, but he surprisingly chose to become Erudite. As an Erudite initiate, he uncovers some interesting tidbits of information that are truly startling. In Insurgent, after the Erudite attack, Caleb stands by his sister for a while. Later, unfortunately, Tris finds out that he is no more than a double traitor. He returns to the Erudites and tells Jeanine much about his Divergent sister, Tris.
