INSURGENT -- CHAPTER 15
Tris finds herself in a mess of smoke from cylinders that the Dauntless traitors threw in. Soon, everybody but for the traitors are out cold. The ground is littered with bodies, including Tris’ friends. Tris plays dead on the ground as the traitors walk around. She recognizes the voice of one of them as Eric.
Once the traitors have gone up the Candor stairwells, Tris gets up. She realizes that everybody is not dead, but gassed. She figures they are under some simulation. She is quick to come to her senses and she steals a jacket and armband from one of the dead traitors.
Uriah is also still awake. Tris realizes that Uriah, like her, is a Divergent. Their Divergence saved them from the gas. Tris doesn’t have a solid plan, but she decides that they should go figure out what Eric is up to. She heads up the stairs with Uriah. She instructs Uriah to go to the third floor to warn the others, while she heads to the second floor to try to help Divergents who were struck by the gas.
Tris looks around the second floor for Divergents. At one point Eric is called out to by a Dauntless traitor and he rushes pass Tris. Tris follows him. She sees a Divergent girl who was found by a Dauntless traitor. Eric instructs his soldier to take the Divergent over to the others they have found.
Tris continues her search for Divergents. She finally finds a Candor girl who reacts when Tris steps on her pinkie finger. Tris speaks to her, letting her know where to run when the coast is clear. When nobody is looking, Tris has her run to a staircase.
As the girl escapes, Tris is shocked to find Eric standing right behind her. He takes her prisoner. She attempts to attack him, but her attempts are useless. He is aware of her bullet wound and he is able to press it to slow her down. He takes her over to a place where they are holding the Divergents they find. Eric instructs a Dauntless traitor to hold a gun at her.
Tris has barely been there when a captured Uriah comes over to join her. Tris isn’t sure if he succeeded in warning the others.
She laughs within her head when she realizes that she still has a knife on her.
