INSURGENT -- CHAPTER 39
Christina and Tris are at the Prior’s house. There, Christina applies makeup on Tris to make her look good. The two plan to leave the Abnegation sector, meet up with Marcus, and go to the Amity sector. Tris must have filled Christina in on her plan and now they are joining team-Marcus.
They leave Tris’ old house and make their way to an alley where Marcus awaits in a truck. From there, they proceed to the fence that surrounds the city and separates it from the outside world. Just beyond the gate is where the Amity reside. At the gate are Dauntless guards. There have always been guards at the gate to protect what enters and leaves the city. To get past the guarded gate, Tris and Christina pose as Amity who are being driven to the Amity sector by an Abnegation volunteer. Supposedly, they are carrying supplies. The Dauntless guards fall for their guise and let them drive through.
Before long, they arrive at the Amity sector and they proceed to the greenhouse. There, they find the speaker for the Amity, Johanna, picking raspberries. She welcomes them. Then, they get down to business.
Tris explains the situation with the upcoming attack. She even tells Johanna that the Erudite are harboring some important, classified information. Tris seeks the help of the Erudite people who defected from their faction and came to the Amity headquarters. Johanna says that’s it too late to speak to them, but in the morning they can figure things out.
The next morning, Tris wakes up first and goes outside. There, she watches some of the Amity members going through a religious morning tradition. They are praising each other with peace. Tris joins in and gives the ceremony a brief attempt just before she runs off. She cannot bear the thought of being at peace.
Soon after, Johanna summons everybody for a meeting. Marcus is by her side as she delivers the news of the alliance that has formed and the forthcoming attack on the Erudites. Johanna asks her people to vote on new actions in the face of these new revelations. She remarks on how many innocent Erudites will be killed. The Amity begin to converse and argue with each other as they come to their whole-group decision.
Meanwhile, Tris runs off to the Erudite defectors who have found shelter and safety with the Amity. Among them, Tris recognizes Cara. They speak to Cara. With Cara’s help, Tris and Christina plan to talk to the Erudites there later.
Hours pass and finally the Amity decide upon a verdict. Johanna announces that they have chosen to stay neutral during these times of violence. Johanna lets her conscience drive her and she rebels against the decision. She says that regardless of the vote, she cannot stand idly by. She will lead whoever wants to go with her to the city to take action.
Johanna gives some departing words to her faction and begins to exit. Many of the Amity follow her out.
