INSURGENT -- CHAPTER 24
Tris compares the death of Eric to that of Will. They die in a similar manner. Tris has a hard time dealing with Eric’s death since it is so similar to Will’s.
After Eric’s execution the Dauntless begin leaving the compound. They are stopped by Jack Kang who questions their actions. Jack Kang is furious at what they did to Eric. He warns them that if they leave then the Candor will become their enemy. Tori makes it clear that they will be okay without Candor help.
Down at the lobby, as the Dauntless exit, Tris is stopped by Cara. She asks Tris what is going on. Tris informs her that they are returning to their compound. She also suggests to Cara that she should go to the Amity compound.
At the Dauntless headquarters everybody gathers paintball guns to use to shoot out the cameras. Meanwhile, Tris stands at a railing speaking to Zeke. Zeke informs her that Shauna is doing okay, but she will probably have her legs paralyzed. It’s sad news and Tris can’t help but wonder what will happen to her since traditionally the Dauntless weaklings either join the factionless or kill themselves.
No matter, Tris encourages Zeke to hang in there. She tries to coax Zeke into believing that Shauna can learn to deal with life in a wheelchair. Zeke doesn’t think Shauna’s personality will permit herself to be wheeled around.
To get their minds off of Shauna, Zeke suggests that they go around shooting the cameras with everyone else. They get guns from Bud and he directs them to the glass building, the Pire, up above. Tris has a hard time going up there since so many negative events occurred the last time she was there.
Zeke and Tris get down to business, but they are interrupted by a playful Marlene who begins shooting at them. Soon, everybody is running around shooting at each other. Tris finally feels the freedom that comes with being Dauntless.
