 INSURGENT -- CHAPTER 23
Jack Kang is quick to make an announcement via an intercom system. He tells everybody that they aren’t the strongest faction and they will be meeting to discuss the demands that the Erudite have set forth. The Dauntless knew this was coming.

The Dauntless begin to gather their items. Before they go they visit Eric in the interrogation room. He doesn’t look too good. Tori asks him what wrongs he has done. Before he answers he looks directly at Tris. He tells Tori to ask Tris about his crimes. Tobias tells Eric that Tris has nothing to do with him. Regardless, Tris begins to state all of his crimes. Tris believes that he deserves the death sentence. Eric makes it clear that Tris doesn’t have the power to decide who dies or lives; she even didn’t have the right to kill Will.

Tobias quiets Eric down. He states that according to Dauntless law Eric deserves execution. Tobias picks up three guns, he empties them of their bullets, he inserts one bullet into one gun, and he shuffles them around. Each Dauntless leader receives one of the guns. They each will be shooting Eric, but only one gun will truly kill him.

Eric in all of his arrogance asks that Tobias be the one who shoots him. Eric throws insults at Tobias which all relate to his fear of his father, Marcus. He states that if Tobias refuses to shoot him then he will truly prove his cowardice to the Dauntless. Eric also wants Tobias to feel bad later about killing him. Tobias with no hesitation shoots Eric.
