 INSURGENT -- CHAPTER 7
The huge dose of serum that Tris took keeps her delirious for several hours. When she comes back to her normal self, Tobias stops by her room with the hard drive. Tobias hides it in the same spot it was before, since it will be the last place Peter will check for it again. They flirt a bit and then Tobias leaves.

Embarrassed at her behavior, Tris decides to stay away from the others for the time being. Instead of going to the cafeteria for food, she goes to the orchard to pick apples and to keep her mind distracted. Her apple-picking doesn’t last long. She hears cars approaching in the distance. The Amity own delivery trucks, however, they shouldn’t be operating today. It is a weekday and they only deliver goods on the weekends. With her good arm, she makes her way to a portion of a tree where she can observe Erudite cars approaching.

Tris hurries back to the Amity compound, ignoring her shortness of breath as she runs. She runs to the cafeteria where she finds Tobias, Caleb, and Susan. The other Abnegation gather around at news of the Erudites approaching. They try to figure out what to do, since they know that the Erudite are coming after them. The Amity with their peaceful mannerisms cannot stop the Erudites. They are in grave danger.

Tobias suggests they use Tris’ gun to fight and run. Tris comes up with a better idea. They should act like chameleons and blend in with their surroundings by dressing up as Amity. The group agrees that Tris has the better plan.

They all split up to go find Amity clothing. In her room, Tris grabs the gun that she has hidden. She debates on what to do with the hard drive. The hard drive contains the codes that controlled the Dauntless, so it is important. Moreover, the hard drive contains security footage of the last living moments of her parents. It’s all she has left of them. Despite her aching heart, she uses the base of a lamp to smash the hard drive to pieces. Destroying it is for the greater good. She puts the debris under her bed.

With tears clearing from her eyes, she finds the Abnegation outside looking through clothes that fit them. Tris still has her father’s old shirt and she doesn’t want to get rid of it. Caleb suggests that she give it to him so that he can hide under his own shirt.

Tris makes note of how the Erudite who have arrived are joined by a few Dauntless supporters. These Dauntless probably had to choose the Erudite-side to stay alive.

A bell rings in the compound, summoning the Amity to the cafeteria. They have no choice but to go. As they make their way to the cafeteria, Tris realizes that they are going to be stuck in the cafeteria while the Erudite question them.
They enter the cafeteria and wait. Finally, Johanna and an Erudite woman enter. The Erudites look around. Johanna makes it clear that they did open the Amity compound to some Abnegation and Dauntless a little while ago, but those people have already left. Johanna knows that Tris and her group are present, yet she lies in order to keep the peace.

The Erudite woman is not satisfied with Johanna’s words. She asks to look around while a few of her Dauntless followers stand guard with guns in hand. Johanna will only approve of a search if the other Amity agree to it. After a quick vote, it is decided that the Erudite and her Dauntless guards can look around.

The Erudite woman begins to search the room. While the others of Tris’ group fit in well, Tobias is a different story. He has a confidence to him, not to mention a haircut, that is different than the Amity’s. The Erudite stops at Tobias and questions him. Tobias says his hair looks short and unlike the others’ hair because it’s hot. Next, the woman reaches for Tobias’ collar to check out his tattoo. Instinctively, Tobias slams the woman to the ground. In the distance, a gunshot is heard. People panic and search for cover.

Tobias pulls the woman in front of him. He takes her gun and shoots at an approaching Dauntless. He is using the woman to block any potential gunshots headed his way. Meanwhile, Tris pulls out her gun and she freezes. Despite the fact that another Dauntless has a gun pointed right at her, she isn’t able to react. Luckily, Caleb is able to grab Tris’ gun and he shoots the man in his leg. Tobias finishes the Dauntless off with his own gun.

Tobias, then, aims his gun at the Erudite woman. He warns her that if she speaks, she’s dead. He looks towards his group of people and tells them that they should get moving. While they exit the cafeteria, Tris notices the Erudite woman planning to slyly shoot a male that is nearby. Tris is quick to push the male out of the way just before the woman shoots. Tris is a little taken back to learn that the person she saved is none other than Peter. Tobias gives the Erudite a stern warning as they continue to make their escape.

Once they exit the cafeteria, the refugees make it to the apple orchard. They are making a mad dash to escape their pursuers. They run beyond the orchard to a corn field. There, upon Marcus’ suggestion, they all split up. Before long, Erudite cars begin driving through the field. The cars hit many of the fleeing Abnegation. Gunshots are also heard as they all run for their lives. Tris is stunned to think that she is helpless to do anything to help.

Tris, Tobias, Caleb, and Susan make it to the gate that separates the other factions from the Amity. In the distance, they still see the lights of the Erudite cars driving through the field. They find a hole in the fence that they can squeeze through. They make their way through the fence and towards the city.

They are in darkness and the safest path to follow is a set of train tracks. They begin running for it. At one point, they stop on account of Susan breaking down. She just lost all of the Abnegation that she was with. As they wait for Susan to bring herself back together, Tobias takes the opportunity to chastise Tris for not acting well with her gun in the cafeteria. If it weren’t for Caleb, she would have been in big trouble. Tris says that it was a onetime mistake.

Tobias knows they must keep pushing forward. The Erudite were probably after them in particular and they should try their best to continue their escape. Caleb is able to coax Susan back on her feet.
