INSURGENT -- CHAPTER 22
A terrible sight awaits them as they get back to their friends. Lynn is by Shauna’s side and Shauna has been shot in the back. Tobias picks her up, despite how much pain she’s in, and he carries her back to the Candor compound. There, Shauna receives immediate surgery from doctors.
While they wait on Shauna’s surgery, Tobias lectures Tris on how terrible it is that she is taking these unnecessary risks. Tris responds that she is trying to follow her parents’ example. They knew the importance of sacrifice. Tobias believes that a sacrifice should come during a time of a dire situation, not a situation that people put themselves into. Tobias makes it clear that if she keeps this up, then he will break off their relationship.
Tris makes her way to her bed. In a nearby bed sits Tori. They converse about what Tori learned in the Erudite compound. Jeanine spends most of her time in a secret lab. Tori was trying to get to Jeanine to kill her when she was found out.
Tris, next, asks Tori a favor. She wants all of the Dauntless to meet together. Tori knows most of them, so Tris knows she can make it happen.
Before long, the meeting ensues. The eavesdroppers reveal what they learned from Max. The Dauntless agree that since Jack is negotiating with the enemy, they are no longer safe with the Candors. They decide to move back home.
If they return to the Dauntless headquarters, they figure they’ll also have to assign new leaders for their faction. Tori is the first to be nominated and given a leader role. They need two more leaders besides her. Next, Tris, Harrison, and Four are nominated. The group is ready to vote on who will be chosen, when Tris turns down the offer. The leaders are then sealed. Tobias got what he had planned for all along.
