 INSURGENT -- CHAPTER 13
Tris approaches Christina and she tries to defend her actions. Christina can’t get over the fact that Tris killed Will. Christina’s younger sister comes along, grabs her hand, and leads her big sister out of the room.

Uriah, who Tris knows from the Dauntless initiation, comes forward to comfort Tris. He makes it clear that Tris did what she had to. Other Dauntless come by to thank Tris for what she did. Tris doesn’t feel like much of a hero, though. She’s just focused on how the truth about Will spilled off of her tongue.

Tobias brings Tris her weapons back. They then make their way to some cots to sleep in. Tris doesn’t stay in the cot long. She sneaks out of it, climbs up countless stairs, and makes her way to the amphitheater on the 18th floor. It’s the same place where the interrogation took place.

Tris brings the interrogation chair to the ledge of the Merciless Mart building. Then, she hurls it off of the building and she screams aloud. She considers jumping from the ledge herself, as she remembers Al from the Dauntless initiation. He too made a few irreparable mistakes, which eventually led him to commit suicide. He too jumped off a ledge. Tris, now, understands how he felt.

Tris is brought back to her senses by the memories of her parents. They sacrificed their lives for her own life and she should not squander it by throwing herself off a building. Tris makes her way back to her cot.

In the morning, Tris and Tobias have a moment to talk privately. Tobias is upset at Tris for keeping the truth about Will from him. Tris confesses that admitting his murder is easier said than done. Her own inner dialogue admits that it’s hard for her to allow anybody to trust her.

Tobias can’t believe that Tris has been keeping things from her. Tris retorts that Tobias has also kept things from her like the secret conversation she overheard him having with his mom one night. Tobias said he was planning to tell her later. Tris doesn’t understand why he gets to procrastinate when it comes to truth telling, but she does not.

Tobias still doesn’t know why Tris didn’t tell her about Will. Tris says that she did tell him about Will. In fact, she had regained control of herself during the interrogation and she openly told everybody about Will’s death. She couldn’t keep it a secret anymore. Although the timing wasn’t great, she confessed because she wanted certain people to hear it.

Tobias remarks on how Tris doesn’t make their relationship a walk in the park. Tris wants to tell Tobias how much she depends on him; however, she isn’t able to. Instead, she apologizes. Tobias had hoped for something more than a simple “I’m sorry” and he leaves her.
