INSURGENT -- CHAPTER 36
Tris realizes that she isn’t dead. She can’t move, but she’s aware of everything going on around her. Jeanine instructs Peter to take her to a lab for an autopsy. When they get there, Tobias is waiting. Peter tells him that the serum paralyzed her for a few hours.
Before she knows it, Tris is in Peter’s arms and with Tobias by their side they begin to escape. They make their way to a vacant room where garbage is stored. There, Tris regains her ability to speak. Next, Peter takes them down a garbage chute, through a fireless garbage incinerator, and out into an alley.
From the alleyway, Tobias is able to shoot and take down two Erudite security guards. Then, the trio continue their escape. Peter leads the group through the surrounding streets. Then, Tris has the idea of hiding in a vacant building. The Erudites will assume they’re still running and probably look for them elsewhere. They find a vacant building and hide under a set of stairs.
Within the safety of their hiding spot, Tris is able to reflect on what just happened. She was saved by her enemy, Peter. Peter explains that he was able to pull the old switcheroo with serums. He also put ingenuity to work with a bad heart monitor wire and a remote that made it seem as if Tris’ heartbeat was fading.
When asked about his motive, Peter explains his unique reasoning. He believes that one of the reasons people do things for others is if they are indebted to them. According to Peter, if people aren’t returning favors then they’re using people. He has a favor for a favor mentality. Tris saved him from being struck and killed by a bullet when the Erudites stormed the Amity headquarters. In return, Peter now saved Tris. Tris is dumbfounded by his logic.
Eventually, the trio makes their way to the Abnegation part of the city. There, an assault group is being prepared for an attack on the Erudites. They’re greeted by Uriah and Christina, but Tobias asks for personal space so Tris can get a moment to recover from everything.
They continue walking to Tobias’ old house where he once lived with Marcus before leaving for the Dauntless. There, they encounter Tori, Harrison, and Evelyn. Evelyn seems happy to see her son.
Tobias takes Tris to his old room, and then to the bathroom. There, he tends to scrapes and cuts that she sustained on her bare feet during their escape from the Erudites.
As the two are in the bathroom together, the early-relationship topic of “love” comes into play. Tris realizes that she almost lost her chance to tell Tobias how she feels. She finally tells him that she loves him. Tobias repeats the three magic words to Tris as they kiss.
