 INSURGENT -- CHAPTER 2
The drink Tris enjoyed helped her to sleep. Unfortunately, it now begins to wear off and memories begin to hit her as she begins to wake up. She remembers Will in a waking nightmare, a daydream of sorts. Startled, she fully wakes up and realizes that she still has her gun. She places it underneath her mattress for safekeeping. In addition to hiding the gun, she realizes she needs to hide the hard drive. She finds a good hiding spot between a dresser and the wall.
Soon, there’s a knock on her door. It is Tobias. He lets her know that the Amity will be meeting shortly to discuss their fates. Tobias asks Tris how she is holding up. As they speak, Tris considers telling Tobias about Will. He does not know that she killed him. She becomes rather shaky and upset at the fact that she killed Will. Tobias, realizing that Tris is upset, comforts her with a kiss.

Tris has to get ready for the Amity meeting. She heads over to the bathroom. The shower is restricted to five minutes of cold water (it’s not too pleasant). When she returns to her room she finds an outfit waiting for her. The wardrobe is a mix of ill-fitting Abnegation and Amity clothing.

Susan comes to the door with food for Tris. Susan is Abnegation and her father was one of the Abnegation leaders, like Tris’ father. Just like Tris, Susan has also lost her father at the hands of the brainwashed Dauntless. Like a true, selfless Abnegation, Susan helps Tris get ready.

As she gets ready, Tris asks Susan about her brother Robert. Robert chose to become Amity when he came of age. Susan tells Tris that she saw her brother for a little bit. Later, Susan remarks on how something big was about to happen with the Abnegation leaders before the Erudite attack. Catching herself being curious about what was going to happen, she pardons her own curiosity. Tris, however, says it’s okay to be curious.

While Tris continues to get ready, she becomes overwhelmed with grief. She has gone through an unbelievably hard time. For whatever reason, after Susan leaves, Tris decides to deal with her grief by cutting her hair.
Soon after, she meets up with Caleb and Tobias. Tobias is the only one to mention her hair. Tris’ excuse for cutting her hair is that it is too hot. Soon, they leave for the Amity meeting. As they proceed forward, Tris recalls how much she misses the Dauntless headquarters.

As they walk, Caleb sparks a conversation with Tobias. He asks if the others know that he is Marcus’ son. Tobias says no and he asks that Caleb keep it a secret. Next, Caleb asks Tobias how old he is. Tobias informs Caleb that he is 18. Caleb remarks on how wrong it is for him to be with his younger sister.

Finally, they reach their destination. It is a greenhouse and at its center is a giant tree. Johanna Reyes stands near the center of the greenhouse, on the top of one of the tree’s giant roots. Tris remarks on how the Amity don’t have an official leader. Johanna is simply a speaker for this incredibly democratic faction. The Amity vote on everything and their minds are so alike that their votes are usually always the same. In other words, they believe in the same things.
The Amity all sit on the ground with their legs crisscrossed in one way or another. The Abnegation are also present; they all sit in rows. Johanna silences the room and she asks the group to figure out what they should do during this time of conflict.

With this question to ponder, the Amity begin discussing their solutions in small groups. Slowly, the groups each come up with their own answer and then they join other groups. The larger groups discuss the same question, come to a consensus, and then they join yet other groups. The same pattern continues until only a few large groups remain. Tris is amazed by the lack of efficiency. It takes forever for these groups to go through this process. Tobias is impressed and he thinks it’s amazing how everybody has a voice.

One person from each remaining large group goes up to Johanna. Together, they discuss the results of each group’s decisions. Meanwhile, Tris deliberates in her own head on what they can do if the vote goes sours. She worries that they will be forced to leave, yet they have nowhere safe to move to.
Before long, Johanna speaks. She begins by remarking on how close the Amity have been to both the Erudite and the Abnegation. The Amity have always been friends to both of these factions and they want to remain friends to the both of them. The current predicament makes things difficult for the Amity. They don’t want to choose sides.

The Amity chooses to stay neutral and their headquarters will become safe grounds for both the factions. As long as the factions can agree to certain conditions, all factions are welcome to enter their headquarters. The first condition is that no weapons are allowed. The second condition is that if any problem arises the perpetrators must leave. The third condition is that the current problems cannot be spoken of (the white elephant in the room must remain a white elephant). The fourth condition is that everybody must help out with the Amity chores; the Amity are very self-sufficient and everybody must help out.

Tris is insightful enough to know that there are issues between those in her group. Peter is a big trouble-maker among them, as is Marcus. The problems within her group will surely lead to some of the conditions being broken. She knows that they will not be allowed to stay for very long. She whispers her thoughts to Tobias and he agrees with her insights.
