 INSURGENT -- CHAPTER 29
Tris doesn’t know how long she’s been in the room before the door finally opens. She is greeted by none other than Jeanine. Tris notices that alongside Jeanine is Peter, as well as two other Dauntless traitors. Tris asks Jeanine what time it is, but she brushes off her question. Instead, they leave to check the compound out.

Tris is taken to a work-room where Erudites seem to be trying to make new serums. From there, they enter another room with an unwelcoming table and a heart monitor. Jeanine tells Tris that she is the strongest Divergent that they know of and they will be using her as a guinea pig to try out new serums. Eventually, when the tests are done, Tris will be killed on that very table. Tris knew her ultimate fate coming in and she isn’t surprised.

Tris is taken back to her holding room for a while. Eventually, Peter comes to escort her somewhere new. She’s taken to a room with a mirror on one wall. Much like interrogation room mirrors, this mirror is probably see-through from the opposite side. The room contains an MRI machine and an intercom. Jeanine uses the intercom to instruct Tris to lie down on the machine so they can take pictures of her brain. Tris bargains with Jeanine and says she will do so without a hitch if she gets to see the pictures of her brain afterwards. Jeanine agrees.

Right after the MRI scan, Tris is escorted by Peter to the room adjacent to the room she was just in. There, Jeanine and some scientists show her the brain scan. The scientists tell Tris that her lateral prefrontal cortex is big. It’s the brain part that is in charge of goal-achieving behaviors. They, then, point out that Tris’ orbitofrontal cortex is tiny. It’s the brain part in charge of wanting rewards. Jeanine infers that because of her brain’s configuration, Tris is able to attain altruistic goals and resist simulations. This information will help them better develop new experimental serums.

Next, Tris is escorted by Peter back to her cell. Before they can get there, Tris is shocked to see Tobias at the end of the hallway being held prisoner by Dauntless traitors. Peter forces Tris to continue walking as Tobias and his captors pass them. Tobias looks terrible, injured by some kind of struggle. They are able to touch hands as they pass and he tells her that he couldn’t allow her to be the only person to die.

After Tobias disappears from sight, Tris and Peter converse about why Tobias came to the Erudite compound. Tris knows that it was a suicide mission. Peter thinks it’s stupid that either of them are there. Tris begs Peter to figure out what Tobias’ fate will be; however, Peter seems to ignore her pleads.
