INSURGENT -- CHAPTER 47
Tris is still in the lobby with other captured people when Harrison and Tori enter. They are followed by a Dauntless soldier who carries in Jeanine’s corpse. Tris reflects upon what Jeanine did and her motives for doing it.
Soon after, Johanna enters. Tori makes a snarky remark on how Johanna’s peacekeepers interfered with the attack on the Erudites. Tori, then, informs Johanna that a new government is about to be formed in which the Amity will have no say in anything. Johanna is not surprised by her peoples’ new role in this government.
After Johanna leaves, Tris looks around and realizes that the only people holding guns are the factionless. Tris senses something bad coming upon them.
Evelyn enters and with her she brings news of how she envisions the new government working. Evelyn describes how there no longer will be factions. Tori is taken back by the news, but she has little say since the factionless now wield all of the guns. Evelyn, then, says that the factionless will reward and punish people accordingly.
Tobias and Caleb come into the room as Evelyn speaks. Tobias goes straight to Tris and he admits that she had been right all along. Then, a projector turns on unexpectedly. Tobias tells Tris that he had Caleb find the secret information. Tobias had Caleb set it up so a video now will play and project the information right there in the lobby.
The video begins with a woman, Amanda Ritter, speaking. She describes how bad humanity has become. Then, Amanda shows video after video of dead bodies, of people performing cruel acts, and of people who show no remorse for their actions. Humanity, as Amanda describes, has lost its moral compass.
Amanda and her group decided to attempt to combat these negative forces by creating a society apart from the rest of humanity. This new society was meant to be a fresh start for humans where the moral sense of right and wrong could return.
Next, Amanda states that when lots of Divergents begin popping up, then it would be the right moment for the factions to return to their origins. At this moment, the Amity should open up the gates permanently.
Lastly, Amanda reveals that the people who volunteered for their society of different factions had their old memories wiped clean. Fake memories were put in their minds to cover up their old selves. Amanda describes that she too would go through this memory-washing process to now take on a new identity, the identity of Edith Prior. Tris realizes that she is related to Edith.
Suddenly, the crowd erupts in shouts.
