 INSURGENT -- CHAPTER 33
Tris awakens in a new experiment room. She is with Peter and Caleb. Tris questions Caleb on his motives for betrayal. He says that it is complicated. He was motivated by many factors, including something that lies outside of the protective fence. The two continue to argue on what side is good and what side is evil, but they are eventually interrupted by the entrance of Jeanine and her scientist groupies.

Jeanine reveals something new they’ve encountered in Tris’ brain. She has an abnormally large number of mirror neurons. These neurons give people the ability to empathize and mimic others. Tris isn’t too impressed with Jeanine’s new-found knowledge and she asks to be taken back to her room.

Tris must fall asleep because her next recollection is being awoken by Tobias. He tells her that they have to get out of there. Tris is confused and she hugs him. He lifts her, accidently hurting her wounded shoulder.

Before long, they run through hallways and to a fire escape. Tobias shoots at Dauntless traitors along the way. At the fire escape’s door, Tris realizes that the real Tobias would have been gentler with her shoulder. This information snaps her into the reality of the situation. She wakes up in the experiment room.

Out of frustration, Jeanine threatens to shoot her unless Tris reveals her secret to beating simulations. Tris makes it clear that the information isn’t coming out. Jeanine tells her that she’s studying the Divergents to protect the city.

Tris, then, finds the power to attack Jeanine. Just before she is pulled back by Peter, Tris hits Jeanine with a blow to the face. Tris scoffs at the injured Jeanine and she revels in her little triumph.
