After Foxface’s body is transported away, Katniss and Peeta debate on what to do next. They gather more of the berries and put it in a bag so maybe they can get Cato to accidently eat them too. Then, they decide to make a fire to cook the game that Katniss killed. Katniss knows that Cato has seen the hovercraft and the smoke from their fire, but she knows that he won’t come after them since it would be too much of a risk for him.

After some debate, the two decide to return to the cave for the night. They have already covered so much ground that Katniss is hesitant to go back, but there isn’t a safer shelter that Peeta can get too. Peeta wouldn’t be able to climb a tree for the night like she can. Katniss also decides to go back to the cave on Peeta’s insistence. She hasn’t been the kindest towards him today and she knows that a kind gesture from her will help play out the love-story that she needs to push forward between herself and Peeta.

The two make their way back by following the stream. It’s a safer path since Peeta doesn’t make as much noise in the water. Once they get back to the cave Peeta falls asleep and Katniss stays up on the look-out for Cato.

Katniss thinks a bit about her remaining opponent. She remembers how crazy Cato became after the Career Tributes’ supplies were blown up and she realizes how his rage can maybe get in the way of the choices he makes.

Katniss lets Peeta sleep most of the night and only when the sun is nearly up does she wake him up so he can stand guard. Later, when Katniss awakens they eat. They know that when they leave the cave this time that it might be the last time they ever visit the place. They leave the cave to hunt and are shocked to find that the stream that they relied on has dried up. The nearby ponds have also dried up. The Gamemakers are aiming for the tributes to all gather in the open area at the lake.

Katniss and Peeta decide just to go to the lake now to confront Cato and get it over with. They know that the longer they wait, the weaker they may get without the proper nourishment and rest. Now, they’re well-rested and well-fed. It is as good of a time as any to face Cato.

The two get to the lake and look around the gold Cornucopia. Cato isn’t around anywhere, so they choose to wait around for a while to see if he shows up before dark.

Katniss gets the mockingjays to repeat Rue’s tune as they wait. All of a sudden, the mockingjays’ song is disrupted by the sound of Cato running right towards Katniss and Peeta. He isn’t holding a weapon, but he does have on body armor which deflects an arrow that Katniss shoots at him.

Cato runs past Katniss and Peeta, and soon they figure out what he’s running from. Chasing him are at least seven creatures. Katniss starts running too.
