The chapter opens with descriptions of a nightmare that Katniss is experiencing. She’s dreaming of past traumatic events, like the horror she witnessed in the forest with the Avox girl, the depression her mom experienced, and the death of her father.

When she awakens, she takes a shower and goes out to have breakfast by herself (the others haven’t arrived yet). As she eats, her mind wanders and she wonders what Prim and her mother are doing right now.

Eventually, when the others do come in for breakfast, Katniss is annoyed with how she is being dressed just like Peeta. She knows that she doesn’t have much say in their costumes, though.

Haymitch starts a conversation with the two about training. He offers to train them separately, but Katniss quickly shoots that down. Next, Haymitch asks what they’re good at and Katniss remarks on her bow hunting experience. Peeta talks up a storm on how good Katniss is at bow hunting and Katniss remarks on how strong Peeta is. Peeta doesn’t see his strength or his wrestling skills as an asset in the Games, but Katniss does see it as an asset so the two argue about their views. Eventually, though, Peeta discloses the fact that his very own mother believes that Katniss stands more of a chance at the Games than Peeta does. This information squelches the argument.

Haymitch then begins to give the teens some advice for a group training session that’s coming up. All the tributes will be present among each other for training. Haymitch says that while the two train in front of the others that they shouldn’t utilize their best talents; instead, they should practice skills they are not attuned to. To their dismay he also suggests that they should always train together. Katniss is peeved at the thought of them training together. She doesn’t want to play friends with somebody she might need to kill. She is further bothered by Peeta’s comment on Katniss’ ability to “effect” people. She is confused on whether he meant the comment as a put-down or as a compliment.

Still angry, Katniss eventually ends up at the lower level of the Training Center where she is introduced to the different stations where she can go practice skills. Atala, who heads the Training Center, eventually allows the group to go begin training. The Career Tributes, wealthy tributes who have trained specifically for the Games, quickly dart to more difficult stations while Katniss and Peeta go to the station that teaches them to tie knots.

The days drag on and Katniss and Peeta continue working together. Their time spent together, especially meal time, is awkward since neither of them want to train together but they have been told to do so by Haymitch.

During their training sessions another tribute, Rue, grows attached to them and follows them around as they practice at stations. Rue reminds Katniss of her own sister because of her age, stature, and even her name (the primrose and the rue are both flowers).

Eventually all of the tributes are seen individually by the Gamemakers. In their presence, the tributes can really show them their best talent with privacy from other tributes. Katniss is the last to present to them. She shows her amazing skills with a bow and arrow; however, many of the Gamemakers who are tired of watching all these tributes perform, seem to be more interested in a fresh roast pig that is presented to them. To get their attention, Katniss boldly shoots an arrow right at the apple that sits in the pig’s mouth. She then thanks the judges and leaves.
