After Peeta tells the whole world that he has feelings for Katniss, the group returns to the Training Center. Peeta is confronted by Katniss who pushes him down and straight into an urn. She declares that he shouldn’t have mentioned that he likes her in the interview. Later, Haymitch reveals that it was with his support that Peeta decided to declare his feelings. Katniss is reasoned with and she begins to realize that she is sure to become more popular than ever with drama and a love story surrounding her. With the public eyes more focused on her comes the ability to earn greater sponsorship.

During dinner, Peeta has to tend to his bleeding, which was caused by Katniss pushing him into the urn. This leaves Katniss feeling guilty since she now realizes he helped her by building up a story, yet she overreacted and injured them.

After dinner that evening, Katniss and Peeta must say their goodbyes to Haymitch and Effie, since they won’t be seeing them again before the Games. Effie is looking forward to being promoted to a more respected district after her success with the two from District 12. Haymitch gives the two some last pieces of advice: run from the drop-off area immediately, find water, and stay alive.

That night Katniss isn’t able to sleep. She is playing out fears in her head, like her fear of the harsh terrain that they might be facing during the upcoming days. Finally, overly anxious, Katniss decides to make her way to the roof where she runs into Peeta. They talk about what has been on their minds: Katniss wants to live to return home, while Peeta wants to keep his sense of identity.

The next day Katniss is picked up by a hovercraft where a woman with a syringe implants her with a tracker, a device used by the Gamemakers to locate the tributes at all times. Next, Katniss has breakfast and then is brought over to the catacombs, beneath the game arena, and there they are taken to the Launch Room where the tributes are held until the Games begin.

Katniss is dressed by Cinna in simple garments, including boots much like the ones she used at home. Cinna is sure to also give Katniss the gold mockingjay pin back, which he had found on one of her previous outfits. She pins it back onto her shirt and sits with Cinna, refusing to talk for a while. Katniss is overwhelmed with anxiety and fear, for in a little bit she could be dead.

Cinna reminds Katniss of the words of advice that were given to her from Haymitch. He told her to run away, and find water. He also reassures Katniss by letting her know that if he could bet on anyone, his bets would be on her. As she is taken up by a cylinder type-elevator, he tells her to keep her chin up.

Katniss is then released into the arena where Claudius Templesmith, the Games’ announcer, officially begins the Hunger Games.
