Katniss has decided to go to the feast tomorrow without Peeta. She hides the cave entrance where Peeta will be staying alone tomorrow by constructing a rock wall before it. She chooses to leave a knife with him just in case, yet she knows that it wouldn’t do him any good if he was confronted by another tribute. In fact, she knows that he only has a little time left before his blood poisoning gets to him.

Katniss ponders who she will probably encounter during the feast. She knows that Foxface will hide out and try to scrounge for things, while the two from District 2 and Thresh will probably be there. Katniss watches the sky to see if any other tributes have been taken out that day, but none were.

Before she falls asleep, Katniss thinks about all of the people at home watching her. She wonders what Gale makes of her friendship with Peeta. Katniss and Gale were practically dating with how close they were, but they never made it to the point of a full-fledged relationship. Now that she is at the Games, she wonders what Gale makes of her relationship with Peeta.

Katniss gets moving to the feast before dawn with her night-vision goggles on. The woods are different, scarier at night. She follows the same path that she’s accustomed to and eventually she reaches Rue’s former hiding spot where she has a clear view of the Cornucopia. Nobody else is in sight.

Finally, when the sun rises, a table rises from the ground near the Cornucopia and the backpacks are all on top of it. Foxface quickly darts in, grabs her backpack, and runs off before anybody watching has time to react. Katniss knows that she must do the same thing now before another tribute closes in and grabs her backpack.

Katniss makes a run for it. As she’s running, she hears a knife flying in her direction and she’s able to avoid it. She turns around, shoots an arrow, and hits Clove in the arm. Then, Katniss continues moving forward as she prepares another arrow for launch. She reaches her backpack, grabs it, and is hit by a knife that slashes a cut in her forehead. Blood flow down from the cut into her eyes and mouth. She fires the arrow she had prepared, it misses, and then suddenly Clove pounces on top of her.

Clove holds down Katniss asks her where Peeta is. Katniss tells her that Peeta is out after Cato, but Cloves knows that she is lying. Instead of quickly killing Katniss, Clove takes her time to pull a knife from her jacket. Clove makes a comment about killing Rue which infuriates Katniss. Then, Clove begins tracing the direction in which she will cut Katniss. Since her attempts at freedom are in vain, Katniss decides to stare at Clove with dignity as she dies. When asked by Clove if she wants to blow a kiss to Peeta before she cuts her lips off, Katniss spits in Clove’s face.

Clove is about to carve into Katniss, when Thresh comes up from behind, picks up Clove, and thrashes her to the ground. He questions her about Rue and how she was involved in her death. Cloves tries to explain herself, but Thresh bashes her with a rock. Then, Katniss explains his friendship with Rue to Thresh. Thresh is from the same district at Rue and he lets Katniss go since he believes he owes her for taking care of Rue.

Cato enters the scene just as Thresh gets away with the two remaining backpacks. Cato kneels by Clove as she passes away.

Katniss darts off and finds her way back to the cave. She finds a medicinal needle inside the backpack and uses it to inject Peeta with medicine. Then, with blood pouring from her head, Katniss passes out.
