With fire surrounding her, Katniss is quick to flee. She follows the animals that are also escaping the encroaching blaze. Katniss knows that the purpose of the blaze is to bring the tributes together. Through these means, the Gamemakers make the Games more enjoyable for the viewers at home to watch.

Katniss runs, but has to rest for a minute when she gets sick. She then decides to try to find the end of the line of fire, and loop around behind it. By doing this she hopes to avoid the other tributes. Just as she is about to take off running, fireballs start being shot at her by what she suspects to be hidden launchers that are controlled by a Gamemaker. Fireballs skid past her hair, scorching part of her braid right off, and another skids and lights her pants on fire at the calf. She is left to wonder if fire was thrown at her on purpose since she was dressed at fire at the opening games.

When the fireballs stop being shot at her, Katniss figures that the Gamemakers stopped because another tribute might be nearby. She is able to stagger away from the smoke, battling her poor visibility. Worst yet, she also must battle burns she acquired: burns on her calf and burns on her hands (she used her hands to put out the flames that hit her pants at her calf-area).

In pain, Katniss pushes forward and soon finds herself walking into a pool of water. The water is a life-saver and helps to cool the burns on her hands. It takes her a while before she musters the courage to peer at her burnt calf. The burn is bad, but it could be worst.

Katniss soon feels sleepiness hit her and instead of finding a safer place to slumber, she decides to nap right in the pool. The pool brings comfort to her wounds and the pain of her calf is unbearable when she removes it from the water. Knowing that she is unsafe anywhere where she might rest, Katniss decides to just stay comfortable sleeping in the pool.

Eventually, Katniss is awoken by the Career Tributes who begin to pursue her. Katniss runs to a tree to climb it and hide. Luckily, the tributes are slower than before thanks to the fire and smoke that they also had to escape. Finally, the tributes catch up to Katniss who is way up in the tree by then. They are all much heavier and bulkier than Katniss, so they cannot climb the tree after her.

After a few unsuccessful attempts to climb up the tree and after an attempt to shoot an arrow at Katniss, the tributes are persuaded by Peeta to just wait until morning to continue trying to get Katniss down. They agree.

Katniss prepares for sleep, but before she slumbers off she catches eyes watching her in a nearby tree. They belong to little Rue who is signaling for Katniss to look up above her.
