Rue has fallen asleep right next to Katniss, so Katniss now knows that Rue trusts her. While she sleeps, Katniss contemplates how she can dispose of all the Career Tributes’ food. She knows that the Career Tributes do not function well when they are forced to go hungry.

The cannon is fired and the girls awaken. They deliberate on who it could have been that’s been killed. They also discuss who is left in the games. The two have two eggs, rabbit, and berries for breakfast and go off to hunt. As they hunt they plan to figure out a plan to get rid of the Career Tributes’ food.

While they hunt Katniss pries Rue for all the information she can on the Career Tribute’s camp. Rue had spied on the Career Tributes on occasion and she noted things like the fact that boy from District 3 is the one who guards the Career Tribute’s food.

Katniss and Rue continue hunting and gathering, and the two girls start to also talk to each other about their personal lives. Rue is the eldest in a large family, she likes music, and has a special fondness for mockingjays who she sings to when she works in the meadows. Katniss tries to give Rue her golden pin, the one of the mockingjay, but Rue refuses it since she has her own charm, a woven necklace with a carving on it.
The girls come up with a plan that forces them to split up. Katniss gives Rue food, matches, and her sleeping bag to use until they meet up again. Rue teaches Katniss a mockingjay song that she’ll have the birds spread and repeat if she ends up unharmed but unable to return quickly. The two say their goodbyes and they are off.

Katniss keeps on thinking about what Peeta did for her as she hastily moves onward. She can’t understand why he saved her and she is now wondering if he has been killed. As she moves, she is extremely cautious.

Eventually, she makes it to a point where she can safely spy on the Career Tributes’ camp. There, she sees four tributes, including a boy from District 3 who seems to be too insignificant to be any threat to any of them. Katniss wonders why the boy has been spared.

Katniss also eyes all of the supplies which have all been piled neatly into a pyramid-type structure. She knows that the supplies must be surrounded by some kind of trap.

Suddenly, one of the tributes, Cato, spots smoke from a campfire that Rue has made in the distance. The tributes debate if the District 3 boy should go with them and ultimately it’s decided that he joins them. During their argument, the tributes divulged the fact that Peeta had been badly cut and he is no longer a threat.

With the Career Tributes gone, Katniss debates on what she should do to the supplies. She knows that a flaming arrow is too risky since it might burn out and it would let them know of too many things, like the fact that she isn’t working alone. Katniss decides to get closer to the pyramid to get a better look. As she is about to get moving, Foxface plunges from the forest and swiftly moves towards the pyramid using calculated runs and leaps. Foxface makes her way to the pyramid and steals just enough food as to make it look like no food had been stolen. Then, Foxface follows the same calculated movements away from the supply pyramid. It then dawns on Katniss that the pyramid has been mined with explosives.

It takes a while for Katniss to come up with a plan, but she eventually comes up with a good one. There is a bag of apples hanging on the pyramid and she decides to shoot arrows at it to puncture the bag. With three arrows in hand, she is able to do so, causing apples to fly out and trigger the mines. The force of the blasting mines thrusts her backwards. Her plan worked.
