After Rue points at it, Katniss notices a wasp’s nest that rests in the tree above her. Katniss is worried that the wasps might be the type that are genetically engineered by the Capitol. Such modified wasps, tracker jackers, could be life threatening since they hunt down those people who mess with their nests. Nonetheless, Katniss decides to cut down the branch where the nest lies and throw it down at the tributes. That way, she can perhaps escape from the tributes who will eventually figure out a way to get her down.

Katniss waits until the Capitol plays the anthem before she starts cutting away at the branch. However, the anthem ends before she is done. The task is difficult since her hands are still burnt. She heads back to her resting spot in her tree when she is surprised to find a gift that parachuted down from her sponsors. The gift is a bottle of ointment for her burns. The medicine works quickly to heal her hands, however, it will take longer to heal the burn on her calf. Now, with her hands healed, Katniss decides to continue cutting down the tree branch. Luckily, Glimmer, the tribute who was assigned to stand guard below her has fallen asleep. Katniss can saw down the branch without the tributes knowing what is to come.

Katniss successfully cuts down the branch and tosses the branch, wasp nest and all, down to the ground below. She is stung three times by tracker jackers, but luckily the other wasps let her be. The other tracker jackers are busy stinging the tributes down below. The Career Tributes are quick to flee to the lake where they can hide from the wasps in the water. Glimmer, however, seems to have died from all of the stings.

Katniss finds her way out of the tree and back into the pool of water that she had found earlier. She wades there a bit to make sure she’s clear of the wasps and then she returns to the dead Glimmer to grab the bow and arrows from her.

After getting the arrows off of Glimmer the Career Tributes return. Katniss has no time to run. Luckily for her, the first tribute that approaches her is Peeta and instead of killing her he pressures her to run. She does so.

As she runs, Katniss begins to hallucinate. The tracker jacker poison from the stings are affecting her judgment. Eventually, she passes out as imaginary ants crawl into her eyes.
