Katniss is in shock upon learning that her younger sister will be entering the Hunger Games. She quickly hops on stage and volunteers to take Primrose’s spot in the games. The mayor allows Katniss to volunteer without hesitation. The mayor doesn’t recognize her as the girl who brings him strawberries.

At first the people of District 12 remain quiet when Katniss comes forth to volunteer. However, after a while they honor Katniss by using an ancient gesture that stands for love. She almost breaks into tears. Luckily, Haymitch chooses to make a drunken scene thus interrupting her emotions.

Next, Effie Trinket moves to choose the boy who will represent District 12 at the Hunger Games. She chooses Peeta Mellark from the bowl. Katniss remembers Peeta as a person who helped her when her family was experiencing a dire time. Katniss escapes into a flashback. Katniss was younger and her father had just passed away. Her mother hadn’t gone out to get work, as she should have without her father there to provide anymore. Without anybody to support them, the family was beginning to starve. Katniss, desperate, went into a wealthy area and scoured around for food.

She was outside the bakery looking through the trash when the baker’s wife yelled and got Katniss to run off. Katniss began to a sulk beneath a nearby tree. The baker’s wife was mother to Peeta. Peeta later came outside with burnt bread that he was told to feed to their pigs. Lucky for Katniss, when the coast was clear, Peeta threw the bread over at her. The bread served as Katniss’ family saving grace, nourishing them from near starvation. Katniss never got the chance to thank Peeta, although she still feels heavily indebted to him.

After she’s done reminiscing, Katniss returns us back to the present where the mayor has just concluded his speech. Katniss shakes hands with Peeta and she hopes that she is not the one who has to eventually kill him in the Hunger Games.
