After dinner, Katniss and Peeta leave to help clean off Haymitch (he fell in throw-up). Peeta lets Katniss run off and he insists on cleaning Haymitch off by himself. It dawns on Katniss that Peeta is a kind person. She realizes that being close to a kind person during the Games can be of disservice to her survival. So, she decides to make sure she stays away from Peeta and all of his kindness. She goes as far as to throw out his father’s cookies from the train since they too were a gesture of kindness. The cookies land outside on a patch of dandelions.

The dandelions cause her to have a flashback. She recalls how many years ago after she glanced at Peeta in the schoolyard, she looked away and her eyes fell upon a dandelion. The dandelion caused her to experience a small epiphany: dandelions are edible and other plants are edible too. She picked the plant, went home, collected her mother’s old apothecary book which her father filled with details on edible plants, and she discovered a solid way of feeding her family.

Her flashback continues and she describes how she began to hunt in the woods. It was a process of learning, beginning by collecting things, like plants and eggs, and killing the occasional rabbit. She learned how to trade at the Hob where she was accepted since the people liked her father. Katniss also began collecting her tesserae. Her tesserae worked in conjunction both with her scouring in the forest and her trading at the Hob to achieve her goal of feeding her family.

As the food started coming in, Katniss’ mother began to break free from her depression. Although Prim was joyous with her mother’s recovery, Katniss still held distrust and a grudge against her mother for not rearing them properly.

Katniss falls asleep and is awoken in the morning by Effie. She goes to breakfast with Peeta and Haymitch. At breakfast, Katniss begins to think about Haymitch and how people don’t seem to want to sponsor District 12 tributes with a mentor like Haymitch supporting them. She encourages Haymitch to give her and Peeta advice. Peeta goes so far as to hitting Haymitch’s drink away from him. Haymitch responds by hitting Peeta. When Haymitch reaches for his alcohol, Katniss stabs a knife in the table to stop him. This, along with Katniss ability to throw a knife, proves to Haymitch that the two of them are tributes who are worth his while. He agrees to help them.

As they enter the Capitol in the train, Katniss and Peeta look out at the amazing city. They are welcomed by a cheering crowd. Their cheers are not welcomed by Katniss’ ears because she knows that they are cheering for their eventual death; however, Peeta acknowledges the crowd and rejoices in his new popularity. Peeta knows that there might be sponsors in the crowd. With Peeta’s acknowledgement of the crowd, Katniss realizes that perhaps everything that Peeta has done and is doing is part of his plan to win the games.
