Following the reaping ceremony, Katniss is whisked away to an elegant room. There, she is given time to say her goodbyes to her mom and her sister. She also makes sure to tell her family what they must do now without her there to care for them. Katniss gives her mother a stern lecture on how she must now be there for Prim. Her mother reassures Katniss that she was ill back then but now she has the medicine to get by. With this medicine inside her system, she can help Prim.

After her family leaves Katniss is surprised to be visited by Peeta’s dad. He comes by to drop off cookies for Katniss. The only thing he says to Katniss is that he will care for Prim while she is gone.

Next, another surprise visitor, Madge, comes to see Katniss. She leaves Katniss with a gold pin of a bird, a token from home. Katniss realizes that Madge has always been her friend.

Lastly, her hunting friend, Gale, comes to see her. They give each other a big hug and Gale stresses the importance of Katniss finding a bow and arrow to use during the games. Katniss reflects on past Hunger Games when contestants were left to weapons like maces and even boulders. She hopes these games will include a bow. Before they know it, Katniss’ time with Gale is over and he’s forced to leave before he can tell Katniss one last thing.

Next, Katniss is taken to the train station. While she’s in the public eye she tries to keep her emotions hidden, whereas Peeta’s emotions are written all over his face.

Luckily, the two have time to enjoy themselves during the train ride to the Capitol. They are treated to rooms within the train with luxuries unlike anything they could have experienced at home.

Within her room, Katniss takes note of the pin that was given to her. It’s a pin of a mockingjay: a cross between a jabberjay and a mockingbird. Originally, the jabberjay bird (a “muttation”) was created to eavesdrop on the enemy during the Rebellion and recount word for word what they had heard back at the Capitol. However, the rebels learned of this trick and started giving the birds lies to repeat. Eventually, with a plan that had backfired, the jabberjays were let loose to die but they reproduced with mockingbirds to create mockingjays. These birds are able to repeat songs and whistles, as some were taught to do by Katniss’ father. In a flashback, she describes her father’s connection with the birds. She is fond of the bird since her father had a way with them. She even writes that “there’s something comforting about the little bird [and the pin]. It’s like having a piece of my father with me, protecting me.”

After dinner, Katniss and Peeta gather to watch a recap on television of the reapings in the other districts. Katniss makes note of the other contestants that stand out: a large boy, a girl with a “fox-face,” a crippled boy, and a girl that reminds Katniss of her sister.

Eventually, the recap of District 12’s reaping is played. Effie then comments on Haymitch’s drunken behavior. While Katniss and Peeta see his antics as humorous, Effie points out that Haymitch is their “lifeline to the world in these Games.” While they are in the arena, Haymitch will be on the outside helping them out.
