Katniss watches as Peeta returns to the girl who lit the fire to make sure she’s dead. She notices that he’s hurt pretty bad and she figures that he must have attempted to get items from the area surrounding the cornucopia. Haymitch had told them not to go for the items, but Peeta had done it. Moreover, Katniss is flabbergasted at the fact that Peeta has joined the Career Tributes.

When Peeta leaves the group of tributes to check on the girl they just attacked, Katniss listens in on their conversation. The Career Tributes discuss how they’re using Peeta. Peeta is just part of their group now because they are using him to find Katniss. They’re all unsure how Katniss earned an eleven when being judged, so that is something that Peeta apparently has yet to share with them.

When the Career Tributes have left the area, Katniss checks her animal traps and she is fortunate enough to find a snared rabbit. She takes advantage of the warm coals from the dead girl’s fire to cook her food. She also takes time to use the ash from a burnt branch to conceal her backpack in black.

Katniss is growing wearier of her lack of water. The woods look all the same, so it is difficult to find any hints as to where to look for water. She figures that going down into the valley is her best bet since water surely travels down from the slopes into the valley. Katniss thinks she’s lucked out when she finds some bloodred berries, but she is unfamiliar with them and cannot risk drinking their juices inside. She’s super tired, but she continues with her search for water.

Eventually, Katniss is at a breaking point so she calls out to her sponsors for water. She knows that they can easily parachute water into her. She reasons that Haymitch must be holding back on getting her sponsors to send water because water must be nearby. Supporting herself with a stick she’s found, Katniss forces herself forward in the search for water.

Finally, Katniss cannot stand any longer. She falls to the ground and finds herself in a heap of mud. She musters the strength to follow the mud to its water source, a pond. Katniss fills a flask with water, purifies it with iodine, and slowly drinks it. She dozes off in a tree until a wall of fire approaches her.
