When Katniss first learns that she will now be trained separately from Peeta, she feels betrayed, but then she quickly recalls that she never trusted him to start off with so she can’t really be feeling betrayal. She goes on to announce that the idea of working alone is “good” and she asks Haymitch and Effie when training for the upcoming publicly televised interviews will begin. The tributes will be interviewed for a televised broadcast.

Soon enough, Katniss’ training for the broadcast begins with Effie. She teaches Katniss proper etiquette, like how to walk in a gown, how to walk in high-heels, how to control her posture, and how to smile. It’s a struggle for Katniss to learn all of this.

Next, she moves onto train with Haymitch. Haymitch discusses how important it is to present herself in front of the audience in a certain way so that she can gain the attention of sponsors. Katniss grows angry at the idea of being trained to do things to impress the audience, so during a mock-interview with Haymitch her hostility comes out. Knowing that she isn’t charming, Haymitch asks her to try acting humble. That fails as does Katniss’ acting in several different manners like pretending to be arrogant and funny. Eventually, Haymitch gives up on teaching her to act in a certain fashion and he basically tells her to try her best without being too mean to the audience.

Later in her room, Katniss goes crazy with anger and begins breaking the dishes that held a meal. The Avox girl from the forest comes into clean up the room, but Katniss tells her to leave her alone. The Avox gets a damp towel and begins moistening Katniss’ face. Katniss tries to apologize for not helping her years ago in the forest. The girl taps her own lips and then points at Katniss’ chest, hinting at the idea that Katniss would have ended up dead or an Avox if she had helped. The two clean up Katniss’ room and then the Avox tucks Katniss in.

In the morning, Katniss is awoken by her prep team. They work on making Katniss look good for her upcoming interview. She is dressed in a radiant dress that makes her look fiery. Cinna also gives Katniss a good suggestion to make her answers to the questions more sincere: as she answers the questions, she should look at him in the audience. Cinna is somebody who she nearly considers a friend, so maybe if she directs her answers at him then she will be more herself.

Finally, Katniss makes her way to the area where they will be interviewed. Seats are reserved in special areas for the most prestigious people. Katniss feels extremely nervous. Her interviewer will be Caesar Flickerman who has been doing these interviews for over four decades. She comments on how he his looks remained unchanged due to surgeries that keeps his appearance young. Katniss also comments on how Caesar is a great interviewer who knows how to put nervous tributes at ease.

The interviews begin and Caesar treats the tributes with the ease and understanding that Katniss said he would. All of the tributes are ready to present themselves with a pitch, like solitariness or sexiness.

Finally, it is Katniss’ turn to approach Caesar for her interview. She is sweaty and nervous. Before she is able to answer her first question from Caesar she has to find Cinna in the crowd. Caesar goes onto ask about her costume at the opening ceremony and she gives credit to Cinna for developing the costume. She goes onto brag about her current dress, even getting up to twirl around to show the dress off to the audience. Encouraged by Cinna’s twirling finger in the audience and encouraged by Caesar, she twirls a bit more for the crowd and it looks like she is enveloped by flames thanks to the fancy decorative garment.

During the interview she is asked what she did in her private session with the Gamemakers that helped to earn her such a high score. Katniss remarks on how it is supposed to remain a secret. Caesar also asks what her sister, Prim, said to her after she took her place during the reaping. Katniss reveals that Prim told her to try her best to win and Katniss agreed to do so. Katniss’ interview concludes with much applause from the audience.

When it’s Peeta’s turn to be interviewed, he is asked about any girlfriend at home. Peeta honestly says that he doesn’t have a girlfriend, but he has been interested in a girl who only now knows he exists. When Caesar presses further and recommends that Peeta should win the Games so that he can go back to be with the girl, Peeta proclaims that such a task won’t be possible because the girl came to the Games with him.
