It takes a while for the tracker jacker poison to exit Katniss’ system. While the poison is still in her, her deepest fears replay themselves in her mind, like watching her sister die. When the poison does leave her system, Katniss takes a while to begin moving again. The poison has taken a toll on her body and she figures the same toll has also affected the other tributes (that’s probably why she hasn’t been tracked down yet).

Katniss has a foul taste in her mouth and she uses nectar from a flower to get rid of it. As she does so, the new sweet taste brings back a memory of Gale. She remembers how Gale had mentioned that the two of them could just run away from District 12. Her memory of Gale is quickly overtaken by her realization that Peeta just saved her life. She is baffled as to why Peeta would help her. She then quickly tries to get Peeta and Gale off her mind since she dislikes thinking of them both, and instead she begins to focus on her new prize. She has just acquired a bow and arrows. She can finally really participate in the Games. She is no longer left to just run away from her enemies.

Before Katniss can focus on the other tributes, she realizes she must take care of her own body. It’s pretty beat up and the tracker jacker stings look pretty bad. She decides to look for water to help her body out.
Before long, Katniss finds a stream where she baths, washes off her wounds, eats a snack, and polishes off her weapons. She follows the stream, walking along it against the current, and she eventually kills a turkey-type bird for dinner. She decides to cook it over fire at dusk when the smoke will be harder to spot.

Suddenly, Katniss notices somebody in the forest observing her. It’s Rue. The two speak and decide to form an alliance. Rue helps tend to Katniss’ wasp stings with some natural remedies, leaves from the forest. Katniss helps feed Rue with the bird she has just started to roast and Katniss also tends to a burn Rue has with her burn ointment. Rue is surprised with how much of the bird that Katniss is willing to share with her. But, Katniss now has a bow and arrow so she is confident that she can catch more game in the future to eat.

The two girls talk about their districts during their meal. Katniss learns that in District 11, the agriculture district where Rue is from, the population who tend to the crops cannot eat their own products they produce. Similarly, Rue learns that in District 12 the coal miners cannot keep any of the coal that they mine. Katniss also learns that although people die out of pure hunger in District 12, the people in District 11 seem to suffer much more at the hands of the Peacekeepers.

Later, Katniss learns that the sunglass she has found in her backpack are actually night-vision goggles. Rue says that they use them sometimes at night while harvesting in District 11. Rue also divulges more information that seems to interest Katniss even more than the goggles. Peeta has left the Career Tributes. Rue also admits that she isn’t surprised that Peeta saved her since she never thought that the feelings that Peeta admitted to having for Katniss were fake.

The girls then talk about the supplies that the Career Tributes have. Katniss points out that one thing Rue has going for is the fact that she can feed herself, while the Career Tributes cannot nor do they need to with all the supplies and food they’ve acquired. Katniss begins to think of a plan in which she forces the other tributes to go hungry.
