Divergent
 by Veronica Roth
  DIVERGENT -- CHAPTER 37
Tris and the others split up. Some of them go to the Amity headquarters, while Tris goes with a few others towards the trains that will lead them to the Dauntless compounds. Caleb has come with Tris’ group since he’s knowledgeable about computers. Also joining them is their father, as well as Marcus.

Once aboard the train, Marcus questions Tris on if she regrets joining the Dauntless now that they have rebelled. She replies that she has not since she learned from them. Her most valuable lesson was learning how much bravery is required to undertake selfless actions. She knows her father is proud of her response.

The train eventually makes its way to the roof of the building that leads to the back entrance of the Pit. They’ll need to make the difficult jump from the train onto the roof of this seven-story building.

Tris’ father and Marcus jump first, Caleb jumps next, and Tris jumps last. Everybody but for Marcus successfully makes the jump. Marcus dangles from the roof’s edge and, luckily, the others are able to hoist him up.

Next, the four of them jump from the roof and down into the cavern that opens into the net. They all make it down successfully.

Tris knows from the conversation she overheard Jeanine having on the phone that there aren’t many Dauntless left in their compound. She plans on finding the control room by spotting any remaining soldiers who are guarding it.

As they make their way towards the Pit they are shot at by somebody who stands near the Pit’s entrance. The tunnel is dark with little lighting, so Tris has the others stay within the tunnel’s shadows while she stealthily pushes forward to take out the guard who shot at them.

Eventually, she spots the guard who advises whoever is there to come out of the darkness. She recognizes the guard as none other than Peter. Somehow, he has escaped the impact of the serum and he is clearly in control of himself.

Tris rushes forward and takes him down with a few blows. She commandeers his gun and forces some answers out of him. He tells her that he wasn’t entered into the simulation because the leaders knew he didn’t need it to obey them. He then makes a comment on how Tris wouldn’t shoot him, so she does just that and shoots him in the arm. She then presses for more answers. She wants to know where the control room is.

Peter agrees to help her if she helps him escape. Tris is baffled by his proposal, but she knows that she must accept it.

Peter leads the group to the eight story of the glass building. As they walk Tris’ father argues with her. He doesn’t think it was right that she shot him. Tris, on the other hand, realizes that sometimes violence is necessary.

Before long, Tris and the group notice guards patrolling the areas up ahead. Tris leaves the group to go on ahead so she can face the guards alone. When she gets near them, she is able to kill them all but for one. He has the opportunity to shoot Tris, but he instead instructs her to go. She assumes that he is another Divergent.

The group pushes forward to the elevator that will take them to the eight floor. Tris insists that everybody stay behind as she goes up the elevator with her father. She knows that it might be a suicidal mission.

On the way up in the elevator Tris’ father thanks her for looking out for Caleb.

When the elevator doors open they are greeted by two guards that Tris’ father shoots. Other soldiers run in from the hallway at the left, so Tris’ father darts to the hallway at the right. The soldiers follow him and a firefight ensues. Tris’ father is able to kill the guards, but he takes a fatal bullet to his stomach while doing so.

Tris is in shock after losing her father. She knows, though, that every moment wasted is another life lost; consequently, she presses forward.

Tris makes her way down the hallway that the soldiers came from and she finds the control room. The room is filled with screens that oversee the soldiers. Surprisingly, she also finds the person who is controlling everything: Tobias.
