Divergent
 by Veronica Roth
  DIVERGENT -- CHAPTER 9
The next day, the recruits must fight each other. Luckily for Tris, there isn’t a recruit to fight her since everybody is already matched up with somebody else. Tris feels bad for Christina, since she must go against the larger Molly. Tris has grown close to Christina and she wants her to succeed.

The first fight is between Al and Will. Al is huge compared to Will. Al is sure to win.

As the two fight, Tris looks over at Peter, Drew, and Molly. Christina loathes the three of them. Drew is especially noticeable since he has orange hair and a large physique. Christina describes Drew as the follower, Peter as a manipulative sneak, and Molly as a girl who likes to hurt others. Christina also describes how they know that she hates them.

The fight between Al and Will roars on. They back off from each other for a bit, only to be pushed to fight more by Eric’s shouts. Al asks how they know that one of them wins. Four says that they can continue fighting until they’re taken down or one person can give up. Eric is quick to throw out the notion that giving up is not an option. There is definite tension between Eric and Four.

The fight continues. Tris compares Al to a slow moving grizzly bear who lurches out at Will without ever being able to touch him. Finally, Al is able to land a blow that knocks Will out. Al wins.

The next fight is between Christina and Molly. Molly is quick to pin Christina down. Christina suffers an onslaught of punches while pinned to the ground. She eventually escapes Molly’s grasp.

As the fight continues, Tris watches helplessly from the side. She has found comfort in squeezing Al’s arm. Later, he comforts her as the fight begins going grim for Christina.

Christina, eventually, squirms and cries with pain. She tells Molly that she concedes and Molly stops her onslaught.

Eric is peeved at Christina giving up. He leads her out of the room and he has the other recruits follow. They walk out to the chasm where Eric gives Christina a choice: hang on the side of the railing for five minutes and her concession will be forgiven, or give up now and become factionless.

Christina decides to hang onto the railing. The treacherous five minutes are made more difficult for Christina with the river splashing on her every so often. Al cheers her on, as does Tris. Eventually, when the five minutes are up, Eric tells Christina to climb back over the railing without help. Al and Tris disobey him and help Christina back to safety.
