Divergent
 by Veronica Roth
  DIVERGENT -- CHAPTER 28
It’s the next day. Tris will be facing her own fears in the simulation soon. Fear of failure race through her mind.

Tris decides to get away from everything. She decides to go see Caleb. She knows she can’t leave the compound without a Dauntless going with her, but she hops a train anyways. She appears homesick and she knows Caleb is a piece of home she can visit. She can’t go back to her Abnegation home; however, she can go see her brother.

Tris makes it from the train to the Erudite compound. She has to use her logic to figure out where she can find her brother. She figures if she makes it to the Erudite’s central building, she can find someone who has initiate records. This person can tell her where Caleb is.

As she walks to the Erudite’s main building, Tris sticks out like a sore thumb. She isn’t wearing the usual Erudite blue. The Erudites all stare at her as she passes.

Tris makes her way to the central building. Inside, she sees Erudites at tables watching computer screens. On the wall is a picture of Jeanine, the Erudite representative who Tris hates for contributing to the slander that has been written about her father.

Below Jeanine’s name is the Erudite’s given slogan, “Knowledge leads to prosperity.” Tris takes a moment to think how selfish such a slogan is.

Tris walks over to a man near the picture of Jeanine. She asks him where she can find her brother. He says he can’t tell her, to which Tris reacts with a negative tone. Luckily, Caleb appears behind her. She greets him with a hug and they rush outside.

Caleb takes Tris to Millenium, an old decaying park that is near the Erudite’s home. There, they can talk with a bit of privacy.

Caleb is concerned for Tris’ well-being. He knows that the Dauntless will not be happy with her daytrip. He questions Tris to make sure she is okay. Then, he asks her if she thinks he made a good decision with becoming an Erudite initiate. Tris assures him that there was no correct decision.

Caleb, then, begins to describe current events in the Erudite compound. He knows that there are whispers of something big that is going to happen. He just doesn’t know what the big, upcoming event is. He also is being influenced by the Erudite and he is questioning the Abnegation’s governmental intentions a bit. Tris warns him of the Erudite’s ability to manipulate people.

Their conversation begins to turn into a sour pitch as Tris pushes Caleb to be weary of the Erudite’s intentions. It is at that point that Caleb suggests that Tris be on her way. Before she departs, she mentions their mother’s request that Caleb look into the simulation serum.

Tris takes off on her own, only to be taken in by two guard-type Erudite men. Her escape isn’t going to be as easy as she assumed.

Tris contemplates her options as the two Erudites escort her back into the building where she found Caleb. She follows them all the way to an office where she meets Jeanine. When she hears Jeanine speak it dawns on her that it was Jeanine who was talking to Eric in the hallway right before she was overtaken by Al, Peter, and Drew. It also dawns on her that it was Jeanine who narrated the aptitude test.

Jeanine speaks of the peculiarities behind Tris’ aptitude test results. Then, she asks Tris why she chose Dauntless over Abnegation. Tris angrily replies with a series of questions that all revolve around the fact that somebody as important as Jeanine shouldn’t be bothering with somebody as insignificant as Tris.

Tris pushes forward with her point. There were errors in Tris’ aptitude results and she wants to know why. Tris suggests that maybe her test administrator was so focused on Tris’ nausea that she neglected to correctly record the test.

Jeanine then asks Tris how she is able to succeed in the Dauntless’ simulations. Tris’ answer is simple and smart: she is brave. Tris then tells Jeanine that she joined Dauntless to escape the endless rules she had to face as an Abnegation. Tris seals her lie by stating that she doesn’t miss the Abnegation ways or her parents.

Jeanine then presses Tris for her feelings on the reports of Abnegation corruption. Tris lies through her teeth and says that she agrees with the reports of corruption. Tris is trying to impress Jeanine in order to save herself.

Jeanine has a man drive Tris back. Once she arrives back at the Dauntless’ home, she is greeted by Eric. She expects to see the angry Eric that she is accustomed to; however, he keeps his cool and questions the motives behind her actions. When she doesn’t provide an answer for him, he threatens her with her rank and the rank of her friends.

Before Tris can mutter out a response, Tobias joins them. Eric tells him to leave, but Tobias sticks around. Tobias sticks up for Tris and her thoughtless actions. Tris then tries to appear vulnerable by crying. Then, she tries to explain herself. Her explanation has just started when Tobias interjects. He explains to Eric that Tris tried to kiss him and when he rejected her, she ran away. Eric finds it incredibly amusing. He lets Tris go without any punishment.

Later, Tobias comes around to check in on Tris. She is angry at him for acting as if their moment of connection never happened. Tobias lets her know that it has to remain a secret for the sake of her rank. If others knew of their romance, they might see her as a teacher’s pet. Furthermore, he didn’t think that she was capable of getting hurt.

Tris understands his reasoning. They talk some more and even kiss. More importantly, the officially decide to become boyfriend and girlfriend. Their relationship will, of course, have to remain secret. Before they depart, he asks to meet with her later that night.

Tris makes her way back to the dorms where she finds Christina. Christina is upset at the fact that Tris disappeared for such a long time. Her worry, though, is overshadowed by the fact that Will kissed her earlier that day. She is giddy about it and excited to talk to somebody about their budding romance.

Their conversation then turns to speaking about home. Christina describes the Candor initiation as a time when initiates take truth serum and are forced to spill all of their secrets.

Later, Tris leaves to meet up with Tobias. He takes her onboard a train. They canoodle a bit before Tobias reveals what he wanted to tell Tris all along. Tobias was able to snoop among computer files and he found war plans. Apparently, the Erudites plan to attack the Abnegation. The Erudites will have to rely on the Dauntless to do the fighting for them.

Tobias and Tris aren’t sure how the Erudites will coax all of the Dauntless to rise up against the Abnegation.
