Divergent
 by Veronica Roth
  DIVERGENT -- CHAPTER 6
Beatrice walks away with the others of the Dauntless faction. As she proceeds she looks over at her dad’s scowling face and her mother’s loving smile. She also glances over at her brother who is happily becoming acquainted with those of his new faction. The transition to Dauntless is not so easy for Beatrice. She feels nauseated at her actions.

Next, Beatrice runs with the Dauntless down the stairs and out the Hub. The Abnegation are against the act of running, so this is a new world for Beatrice. Once outside, they await the arrival of the train. The train doesn’t stop for them. All of its doors remain open as it zooms past the Dauntless, and they are expected to jump in. Those accustomed to the jump easily enter.

Beatrice has some difficulties entering. She jumps and hangs onto a handle within a door until another new recruit helps bring her in. Another new recruit isn’t able to make the jump and with his inability to get onto the train, he is technically deemed factionless.

The girl who helped Beatrice inside, a former Candor, introduces herself as Christina. They discuss where they are going. Neither of them really know where the Dauntless reside.

As they zoom by the Abnegation homes, Beatrice wonders about her brother. She had glanced in Caleb’s room and had seen books before, yet it never dawned on her that he was studying to become an Erudite. She then begins thinking about how lonely her parents will be without their children there at home.

Beatrice’s thoughts are interrupted by the fact that the other Dauntless have begun jumping off the slowing train, onto a high-up rooftop. Those new to the faction are uneasy about jumping. Christina and Beatrice hold hands and jump off the train together. A former Amity boy stays behind in the train, and in doing so he loses his place among the Dauntless.

Another Dauntless has failed the jump. She has fallen seven-stories to her death. Her Dauntless friends are visibly shaken.

The death of the girl leads Beatrice to a few conclusions: people will die, dangerous occurrences will happen, and then even more dangerous things will happen.

Soon, Max introduces himself. He is one of the leaders of this Dauntless group. He instructs the newcomers to jump off a ledge that leads to an entrance. Beatrice bravely goes first off the building and into a hole below.

Beatrice falls through the hole and onto a net. There, at the bottom, a young man helps her off. She finds herself on a ledge, still high above the ground, with the young man and another girl. The two Dauntless are surprised an Abnegation jumped first. As they talk, their names are revealed: Lauren and Four.

Four asks Beatrice for her name. Apparently, it is customary for a member of a new faction to choose a new name. Beatrice chooses to be called Tris.
