Divergent
 by Veronica Roth
  DIVERGENT -- CHAPTER 20
Tris is back in the fear simulation. While she knows it’s fake, she also knows of the repercussions that came with the simulation. For example, she suffers from terrorizing flashbacks and horrific nightmares.

Within the simulation, she finds herself in the Pit surrounded by the other initiates. She is somehow trapped in a tight glass box that has water rising from its bottom. The other initiates just watch. Four shrugs when Tris eyes him, while Christina and Peter just laugh. It is only Will who helps by telling her to “think.”

As the glass becomes full of water, Tris begins to concentrate on how she is just in a fake simulation. She screams as the water begins to take over the box. Luckily, she finds a crack on a side of the box, and she uses this weak spot to break the box open. She is free and can breathe again.

Once the glass breaks, she wakes up in the real world again. Four is stunned by her simulation accomplishment. He doesn’t know how she caused a rupture in the glass. As he walks her back to the dorm, his only conclusion is that Tris is Divergent. He promises to dispose of the video results of her simulation; however, next time, she must not alter the simulation in such a manner. He warns her that others find out she’s Divergent they will kill her.

Confused, Tris makes her way to the tattoo parlor to Tori to get answers. There, in a back room, Tori tells her that as a Divergent she is one of the few who recognizes when they’re in a simulation and is able to change the simulation’s occurrences to suit them. She also confirms Four’s notion of how other Dauntless, the Dauntless leaders, will kill her if they find out what she really is. Tris is dumbfounded by this notion.

Tris questions Tori on the idea that the Dauntless leaders would kill her. Tori confirms that her very own brother, Georgie, was Divergent. When he reached the simulation part of the initiation, the Dauntless leaders got a whiff of what he was capable of and the killed him. His murder was officially deemed a suicide.

Tris takes a moment to reflect on Four’s help. She can’t help but wonder why he is helping her. She even speculates that perhaps he too is Divergent.

Tori concludes by telling her that she doesn’t know why the Dauntless target Divergents, but she does know that they kill them.
