Divergent
 by Veronica Roth
  DIVERGENT -- CHAPTER 3
After the confrontation with the man in the bus, Beatrice wakes up in the testing room. Tori begins removing the electrodes from Beatrice’s face. Tori leaves the room to go talk to somebody else since the results of the test were “perplexing.” Meanwhile, Beatrice is left to wait nervously for her test results. She is concerned that she failed the test and must live out the rest of her life without a faction.

Tori returns with news. Each decision people make in the test rules out a faction and leads to a new scenario. Within her test scenario, only two factions were ruled out. If she had shown a negative reaction to the knife, she would have been chosen as Amity. If she had told the truth to the man on the bus, she would have been ruled Candor. Since she did neither, she could not be chosen for the Amity or Candor factions.

The rest of the test showed mixed results. She couldn’t be Abnegation because she lied to the man when the truth could have saved him; however, she could be Abnegation because she tried to stop the dog from harming the little kid. She also couldn’t be a Dauntless because a Dauntless would have taken the knife; however, she could be a Dauntless because she bravely confronted the dog. Her smart reaction to the dog also showed that she could be Erudite.

Tori then comes to her conclusion that Beatrice is Divergent. Tori warns Beatrice that Divergence is unsafe and that nobody can know of her results. She suggests that Beatrice go home to decide her faction.
Beatrice decides to take her time getting home since if she gets home too early her dad will be suspicious. She explains that walking home is okay as long as she doesn’t get too close to the edge of the roads where busses drive.

As she walks home she thinks about her current faction. She likes the beautiful ideal the Abnegation follow, yet she has trouble being as selfless as those in her family. She feels fake when she follows their ideals. She knows, though, that if she chooses a different faction that she will have to leave her family.

As she continues walking, she begins to make note of the crumbling old parts of the city. The city is in decay in many parts. It’s in these bad parts of the city where those who don’t have a faction live. They are the workers who do the dirty jobs that others within factions don’t want to do.

Beatrice begins to pass by a factionless man who asks for food. Following her Abnegation values, she hands him some fruit. The man grabs her wrist when she offers the fruit. He makes mention of how young she looks. Beatrice replies by saying that she is sixteen. Realizing that she must choose her faction today, the man lets go and tells her to make a good decision when choosing factions.
