DIVERGENT -- CHAPTER 33
Tris is exhausted and she makes her way to the dorms to sleep. There, she falls soundly asleep until she is awoken by the sound of the other new recruits getting dressed. Unsure of what is going on, she tries to get Christina to respond to her. She is in a hypnotic state and doesn’t notice Tris. Will is under the same trance. Despite her desperate attempts, she cannot stop her friends from getting dressed, from lining up with the other new Dauntless members, and from walking out with the others.
Tris instinctively knows that she should follow them. She quickly gets dressed and follows them out the door. They walk in unison to a room filled with other mindless Dauntless. There, she is stunned to find piles of guns. The group is totally synchronized in their movements, and Tris tries her hardest to follow their every step. She arms herself like them, and she marches out to the trains like them. The only people who aren’t affected by this trance seem to be the Dauntless leaders that she passes along the way.
Tris also hopes that her theory on Tobias being Divergent is correct because if he is, then he too must have not been affected by the serum.
When the groups get to the trains Tris notes that people are robotically helping each other onboard. The person that ironically helps Tris onboard is Tobias. She is displeased to find that he is acting as hypnotized as the rest of them.
Once they are safely onboard, everybody stands tightly close to each other. Tris is right next to Tobias. She is uncertain about him, however, he finds a way to grasp her hand and they communicate by squeezing each other’s hands. She is relieved to learn that he too must be Divergent.
The train makes it way to Tris’ old home. Tris knows that the Dauntless are there to take down the government. The groups disembark and march through the Abnegation streets. Tris watches in horror as one of the Dauntless soldiers mindlessly kills an Abnegation council member, Tori. Most the Abnegations are being forced into a building by the soldiers.
Eric, a Dauntless leader, pokes at Tris and comments on how shocking it is that the Dauntless soldiers are in a hypnotic state. He is speaking to another female Dauntless leader. Then, Eric puts his gun in front of Four and comments on how the legendary Four is nothing now. The female Dauntless leader could care less if Eric were to shoot Four. Eric seems all too thrilled to shoot his adversary, so he prepares his gun to take a shot.
Tris, fearing for Four’s life, points her own gun at Eric to stop him from shooting Four. She then shoots Eric in the foot. Four shoots at the female Dauntless leader. After the shots are fired, Tris and Four quickly run for their lives.
Unfortunately, Tris is shot in the shoulder during their escape. Four refuses to leave her and soon they are captured by Eric and other Dauntless soldiers. Eric recognizes them immediately as Divergent.
