DIVERGENT -- CHAPTER 36
Tris makes her way into the ally. She is being followed by a few soldiers who shoot at her. Luckily, her mother has left Tris with a gun of her own. She utilizes it to shoot at them. They are all taken down, but for one of them. He continues chasing her. Tris recognizes him as her old friend Will. With great hesitation she kills him before he can kill her.
Tris finally gets to the door of the basement where her father and Caleb are in hiding. She uses a secret succession of knocks that her mother passed onto her to get them to open the door. Caleb opens it and lets her in. Inside the basement she finds other familiar faces including her father and Marcus, Tobias’ father.
They tend to Tris’ wounds as Caleb describes his predicament. After heeding their mother’s words that Tris passed onto him, Caleb discovered bits and pieces about the Erudite’s plan. After learning of their plans, he chose to stop his initiation and become factionless.
Caleb is able to remove the bullet from Tris. Her father stitches up her wound.
Then, Tris is forced to describe the fate of her mother to them. They are, of course, upset by the loss of Natalie, but they are comforted that her death was not in vain. She died to save Tris.
Tris realizes that she must follow her mother’s instructions and help save those who are in hiding. She not only is Divergent, but she also has attained Dauntless skills during her training.
Marcus suggests that they escape the city and seek refuge with the peaceful Amity faction.
Tris is asked if she knows anything about the Dauntless’ strategy. They need all the information they can get to plan a successful escape. Tris, however, admits that it is the Erudite who are at the wheels of any strategy.
Tris suggests that they stop the simulation that is controlling the Dauntless soldiers. She puts two and two together and hypothesizes that the control room where Tobias once works is where they have the master simulation playing out. That is the place where all Dauntless information must have already been kept. Tris knows that they must somehow get there and stop the simulation.
Tris’ father suggests that the group splits up. Tris will lead a few of them to the Dauntless control room, while the others will make their way to the Amity’s headquarters. Tris is pleasantly surprised by how adult-like her father is now treating her.
