Divergent
 by Veronica Roth
  DIVERGENT -- CHAPTER 21
Four days later, Tris is walking alone down a hallway from the Pit. As she walks, she describes new articles that have been written by the Erudites about the Abnegations. It accuses Abnegations of prompting selflessness to other factions so they themselves can keep luxuries for themselves. The Erudite also question why other factions cannot fairly be a part of the government.

The article bothers Tris, so she decides to get away for a bit. She walks the tunnel back to the area where she first jumped into the Dauntless compound. There, she finds the net where she first landed after jumping off the edge of a roof. She lays in it, looks up at the night sky, and reflects on recent occurrences.

She has been tasting fear more than ever. The simulations have grown more difficult since she now has been letting them run their courses. She has experienced four different fears, the fourth being the most difficult. In this fourth simulation, she had to kill her very own family.

The night passes and soon she is in the simulation room again. The new simulation is a repeat in which she must kill her family again.

She awakens from the simulation and describes to Four how she misses her family. She asks Four if he misses his family, but he replies that he doesn’t. Upon receiving this odd response, she locks eyes with Four for an uncomfortably long time as she thinks to herself whether he too is Divergent.

Eventually, Tris makes her way back to her dorm. As she walks, she describes how the other initiates have been reacting to the simulations. While Tris has been biting her nails at night and suffers from nightmares, the others have been going through much greater pains. Drew just stares at the wall and Al screams like crazy at night.

When Tris makes it to the Dorm, Eric is there with the new rankings ready to be shared. Tris is first, Peter second, and her friends are closer to the bottom. Peter is livid at Tris for beating him. He takes her and pins her against the wall, asking her how she accomplished it. Will forces him off of her. Peter tells Will to wake up to Tris’ manipulation of people.

After Peter and his friends leave, Will asks Tris if she is indeed just manipulating him. Christina points out that Tris is not doing so.

Everybody leaves the dorm but for Al and Tris. Al was ranked at the very bottom. Tris tries to comfort him with no success. He begins sobbing and asks to be alone. Against her better judgment, she leaves. As she walks away from the dorm, she feels like she has failed to help Al.

Tris finds her way to a hallway to be alone. There, Uriah finds her. He invites her to go with some of the other Dauntless initiates. In order to win a bet, Uriah is going to shoot a muffin from atop of Marlene’s head.

The Dauntless initiates seem to understand why ranking so high has made Tris an outcast among the other transfer initiates.

Tris, Uriah, Marlene, and Lynn make their way to the training room. There, Marlene stands before a target with a muffin on top of her head. Uriah will be shooting plastic bullets at her. He shoots and knocks the muffin right off her head.

The commotion in the room brings Four, Zeke (Uriah’s brother), and Shauna in. They let the initiates know that they shouldn’t be in there. They escort the initiates out.
As they walk, Four places his hand on Tris’ back. He stops and takes a moment to encourage Tris to hang in there as she becomes Dauntless. Tris reacts by grabbing and holding his hand for a second. She then bolts towards the others.

Eventually, Tris makes her way back to the dorm. There, she pretends to sleep as the others come in. As she lays there she wonders about her future with her friends. She doesn’t know if their friendships will last with the way they reacted to her success.

During the night, Tris steps out to grab some water. She overhears Eric talking to somebody about Divergent rebels. Apparently, Eric was appointed to fish out any Divergents that might be trickling their way through the system.

Before Tris has a chance to return to the Dorm, she’s overtaken by three people. They cover her eyes with cloth, two hands keep her arms at bay, and another hand covers her mouth to prevent screaming. She
recognizes Peter’s voice. After a while, she recognizes the scent of Lemongrass and sage, something that Al uses. She now knows it’s Al who is helping out Peter.

They take her to the chasm where Al pushes her against the railing. As the other boys taunt her, she is held against the railing by Al. Eventually, she is able to bite Al and force him to let go of her. Then, she bites another arm. Still blindfolded, she doesn’t know who this arm belongs to.

The person whose arm she’s biting throws her to the ground. She then tries to remove the blindfold, but is kicked before she can do so. Next, somebody pulls her hair and throws her again to the ground. On the ground, she is able to take the blindfold off.

She watches as somebody approaches from afar. Meanwhile, Al runs away. Before she knows it, Peter has taken her up and he is able to throw her off into the chasm. Luckily, she is able to take hold of the railing.

As Tris holds on for her life, she hears a commotion from behind her. She hears the third member of Peter’s crew, Drew, being beat up. She is able to see that it is Four who has come to her rescue.

With Drew defeated, Four pulls Tris to safety.
