Divergent
 by Veronica Roth
  DIVERGENT -- CHAPTER 15
Visiting Day has finally arrived. Nobody is quite sure if their parents will show up.

Eric enters the dorm while the group tidies up and gets ready. He makes it clear that they live by the words “faction before blood” and that the group should not seem too attached to their families. Before Tris leaves the dorm, Eric compliments Tris for her splendid fighting technique.

The group walks to the Pit. Christina and Will joke around with each other and Al is nowhere to be found.

Once they reach the Pit, Tris sees some of the transfer initiates’ families. Peter is visited by his parents, Will is visited by his sister, and Christina is visited by her mother and sister.

Upon looking around for a bit, Tris sees her mother. Tearing up, Tris runs to her. They hug for a while before her mother insists that they speak about Tris’ experiences so far. Tris, however, asks about her father. Her mother says that he had to work and he has recently been selfish. Tris takes this as a hint that her mother is mad at her dad.

Next, Tris asks about Caleb. Apparently, her mother cannot go visit Caleb because Abnegations have been forbidden to visit the Erudite’s headquarters. The two factions have always quarreled and now things are really bad between them. Tris feels bad for Caleb and how alone he must feel now.

Tris spots Four off in the distance and she wonders where his family is. She points out Four to her mother. Before long, Four is introducing himself to Tris’ mother. Her mom introduces herself as Natalie. Natalie says that Four looks familiar, but Four says that such a notion isn’t possible.

Natalie asks Tris about friends she has made. They begin walking over to Christina, but they’re stopped by Al’s parents. Al is nowhere to be found.

Finally, Natalie and Tris speak to Christina, Will, and their families. Will’s sister, Cara, is disturbed by the fact that Will is friends with an Abnegation. Moreover, she is under the impression that Natalie’s organization doesn’t really give food and necessities to the factionless, but keeps such items for the Abnegation. Natalie discards such a notion. The foul comments continue from Cara and Tris is ready to get physical with her. Natalie, however, decides to walk away with Tris.

Natalie has Tris follow her to a private room. Natalie seems to be knowledgeable when it comes to the Pit’s layout. Once alone, Natalie asks Tris about how her ranking is coming along. Tris, surprised that her mother knows about ranking, says that she isn’t ranked highly.

Next, Natalie asks about the aptitude test that Tris took. With some hesitation, Tris admits that her test results were inconclusive. Natalie admits that she figured so much and she tells Tris to never become too noticeable in the rankings. Tris tries to question her mom about being Divergent, but Natalie makes it clear that she cannot ever use that word.

Natalie then asks Tris to go visit her brother when she can so she can tell him to work with the simulation serum. Tris presses for questions, however, her mom refuses to answer them. She doesn’t want Tris to get in any sort of trouble.

With a kiss on the cheek and an “I love you,” her mother disappears. As she leaves, it dawns on Tris that before she became Abnegation her mother must have been Dauntless. She knew too much about the Dauntless to have originated from any other faction.
