Divergent
 by Veronica Roth
  DIVERGENT -- CHAPTER 23
Tris sleeps in Four’s room that night. A gentleman, he takes the floor, while she remains in his bed. As he sleeps, she tries to figure out what Four was before he became Dauntless.

Morning comes soon enough. Four asks Tris about her injuries. She is clearly in pain, however, she must proceed with the day. She knows that she must use the injuries to appear weak and vulnerable so that she gains the sympathy of her friends.

She sits next to Will and Christina. Uriah comes into the scene too. They all stare curiously, waiting for Tris to describe the incident that led to her injuries. She has a fat bruise on her cheek, something that she cannot hide.

Tris describes how Peter, Drew, and Al attacked her. Christina is especially shocked of hearing of Al’s actions.

Uriah describes how Peter is acting more desperate as he continues with stage two of the initiation.

Drew suddenly appears with a badly beat up, swollen face. He walks over to his friends.

Tris’ friends ask if she is the one who beat up Drew. She says that somebody she didn’t see came in and saved her before they threw her into the river below.

Uriah says that they need to avenge what happened to her. He suggests they do something that ruins Tris’ attackers for good, so that they become factionless.

Their conversation is interrupted by Four who instructs the transfer initiates to follow him off to do something new. They follow him up narrow paths that line the Pit. They keep moving higher and higher until the reach a staircase that brings them to the glass building at the very top. In the glass building, Four escorts them into a strange room.

Four describes the room as a fear landscape where they will face virtual copies of their fears, some of which they already faced in the nightmarish simulations. This test will be different since they will be aware of the fact that they are in a fake atmosphere. The simulations were more of a dream-like atmosphere, while the fear landscape is a place where they will be aware of the fakeness of it from the start.

Four also describes how Dauntless leaders will observe them as they complete this test. Unlike the other simulation, this one will be watched live by the judges. They will be judging the initiates’ physical and mental capabilities.

Four goes onto mention how initiates can pass the virtual fears by either calming down or conquering their fears. He also says that all initiates will have a different number of fears to face.

Peter voices his opinion on how unfair it is that one person may face more fears than another person; but Four quickly remarks on how Peter is the last person who should be worried about playing fair. He even approaches Peter and tells him that they all know with the way that he attacked Tris that he is afraid of scrawny little girls.

Later that day, they return to the dorm and see Al there. Will and Christina form a protective stance around Tris. Al looks terrible from crying. He is quick to literally beg Tris for forgiveness.

Tris remembers her former self who would have accepted this apology. This Tris, though, threatens Al with his life if he approaches her ever again.
