CATCHING FIRE -- CHARACTERS
Katniss Everdeen.
Katniss is the protagonist of Catching Fire. In the last book, The Hunger Games, Katniss was sent off to the Capitol’s yearly competition of the Hunger Games. She won the Games with her friend Peeta. Now, Katniss must readjust to her life as a victor, a life filled with many perks and many complications. The greatest complication is undoubtedly that of the Quarter Quell, a unique competition that happens every twenty-five years. Although she’s a victor of Panem, Katniss finds herself in the middle of this quarterly competition.

Primrose Everdeen.
Katniss’ younger sister, Primrose (Prim for short) is Katniss’ prime reason for being a victor of the Hunger Games. In the first book of the trilogy, Prim was chosen to be in the Games, but Katniss chose to volunteer in her place. Now, as the sister of a Hunger Games victor, Prim lives a good life that comes with wealth, prosperity, and popularity. Although quiet and innocent, she is admired greatly by the people of Panem.

Gale Hawthorne.
Katniss’ best friend and confidant, he hunts and gathers with Katniss in the woods surrounding District Twelve. Gale works in the coal mines of District Twelve, and he only can meet with Katniss every Sunday, his day off, in the woods. Their relationship grows from a casual friendship to something a bit more in Catching Fire.

Katniss’ father.
Katniss’ father taught her how to use bows and arrows to hunt in the woods. He died unexpectedly when Katniss was a child. His death forced her to take the reins of her family. Although she struggled to care for her family in The Hunger Games, Katniss’ role as a provider (the old role of her father) became easier when she brought her family prosperity by winning the Games.

Katniss’ mother.
In the first book of the series, Katniss’ mom was somebody that Katniss resented for not being a good, capable mom. Her mom had suffered a long bout of depression after her father’s passing, and her motherly capabilities had left her for a while. In Catching Fire, however, Katniss’ mom is a much stronger, healthier person who has become much more of a stereotypical, loving mother.

Peeta Mellark.
Born and raised in District Twelve, he’s the son of the local baker. In The Hunger Games, he survived the Games with the help of Katniss, and he even proclaimed his love for Katniss along the way. After the Hunger Games, the relationship he had with Katniss sizzled out and became really quite awkward. To make matters more complicated, in Catching Fire Peeta is forced to parade around with Katniss during their Victory Tour through each district. His undying compassion for Katniss, however, prevails throughout every circumstance, even during the Capitol’s cruel Quarter Quell.

Haymitch Abernatchy.
Other than Katniss and Peeta, Haymitch is the only living District Twelve resident to have won the Hunger Games. Given his position as a victor, he served as the mentor and guide for Katniss and Peeta as they fought their way through the Games. Similarly, in Catching Fire when Katniss and Peeta return to a new arena for the Quarter Quell, Haymitch is there to help guide them. He even has a few tricks up his sleeves which are essential for their survival.

Effie Trinket.
Effie is sent by the Capitol to escort Katniss and Peeta around. As an escort, she oversees the District Twelve victors during the Victory Tour and she oversees them prior to the Quarter Quell.

Cinna.
Katniss is fortunate enough to be given an amazing stylist for her times on camera. It is his job to prepare her looks and her apparel for publicly televised events. Cinna goes beyond his given job and he supports Katniss as a true friend.

Caesar Flickerman.
The gentleman who interviews the tributes before and after the Hunger Games.

President Snow.
A true antagonist in the series, President Snow is the head of Panem. As leader, he makes sure things like the Hunger Games and the Quarter Quell occur to help serve as a reminder of the consequences of rebellion.

Twill and Bonnie.
Twill and Bonnie are two civilians who escaped District Eight in hopes of reaching District Thirteen. Katniss encounters them in the woods. Katniss is intrigued by their plight, but baffled by the possibility of District Thirteen’s existence since it was said to have been destroyed during the rebellion.

Plutarch Heavensbee.
Plutarch is the new Head Gamemaker. He took over the job after Seneca Crane, the old Head Gamemaker, made the mistake of letting two people win the last Hunger Games. Plutarch seems like a new enemy to Katniss, however, looks can sometimes be deceiving.

Cashmere and Gloss.
Cashmere and Gloss are the District One tributes who are a sibling duo. They never really grow too close to Katniss.

Brutus and Enobaria.
These are the District Two tributes. During her Hunger Games, Enobaria killed an opponent with her teeth. Since then, she has had her teeth sharpened into fangs.

Wiress and Beetee.
These two are the victors from District Three who enter the Quarter Quell. They are both a bit quirky, yet they are both incredibly intelligent. Katniss has a fondness of them and welcomes them into her alliance. At the Training Center, while talking to Katniss, Beetee is kind enough to point out a weak spot in the protective force-fields that the Capitol uses. This information would prove invaluable later during the Quell.

Finnick Odair.
A former winner of the Hunger Games, Finnick is good with a spear and nets. He comes from District Four where fishing and gathering food from the ocean is their specialty. He won the Hunger Games at the age of fourteen, and now at twenty-four he is still in great shape. He later becomes of great use to Katniss and Peeta in the Quarter Quell.

Mags.
The female tribute from District Four, she is Finnick’s mentor and a motherly-figure in Finnick’s life.

The Morphlings.
The two District Six tributes, these two have become addicted to the pain-killer called morphling. Their drug addiction has disfigured their skin; and their drug addiction has added them to the list of the least threatening contenders in the Quarter Quell.

Johanna Mason.
Johanna is the female District Seven victor who enters the Quarter Quell. She is friends with Finnick, and through him she forms an alliance with Katniss and Peeta. During the Quell, she even goes as far as to save two other tributes that Katniss felt should be part of their alliance.

Blight.
The male District Seven tribute, he is there by Johanna’s side until he has an unfortunate encounter with the Gamemaker’s force-field.

Cecelia and Woof.
Cecelia and Woof are the District Eight tributes. They both enter the Quarter Quell with the aim of helping Katniss, even though Katniss doesn’t know it. Sadly, Cecelia has to leave her three children behind when chosen for the Quell.

Chaff and Seeder.
The District Eleven victors who are chosen to enter the Quarter Quell. Katniss seems to trust them a bit more since Chaff and Haymitch are old friends.
