  CATCHING FIRE -- CHAPTER 22
Suddenly, with the District Six tribute dying, the monkeys begin to back off and run back to the trees. Katniss figures the Gamemakers forced them back into the jungle.

They bring the dying tribute to the beach where Katniss looks closely at her wound. Although the bite isn’t bad, the place where it bit is bad. She is dying from a cut to one of her important organs. Peeta speaks to her about his paints at home, and she begins to relax as her life fades away. When she does pass, Peeta drops her into the water where a hovercraft comes to grab her. Finnick, who has meanwhile gone to retrieve Katniss’ arrows, returns.

The three go over to the hole Peeta made in a tree to try to get water. It works and soon their thirst is quenched.

They decide to settle for the night and Finnick volunteers to stay up on watch. Katniss insists on staying up instead, but she then realizes that he needs some time alone to mourn the loss of his ally and friend, Mags.

While the others sleep, Finnick gathers shellfish for breakfast. In the morning, Katniss is pleased at the sight. However, she is unhappy with her scabbing, itchy wounds that are a remnant of the poisoned fog. Lucky for them, an ointment parachutes down to help their healing.

Finnick and Katniss rub themselves with the ointment, and with it on their faces they startle Peeta awake. He screams a bit at the sight of their looks. Then, as if timed on purpose, they get yet another surprise: a loaf of bread from a parachute. Katniss knows her friendship with Finnick is winning her brownie points in the outside world.

The three sit and eat shellfish and bread as the day passes them by. Nothing extraordinary happens until a giant tidal wave emerges, and gobbles up one of the tributes whose scream they hear. The wave seems to have no real impact on the three of them. They have gathered all their important belongings before the wave hits.

A little later, they see three reddened figures approaching them on the beach. Katniss, Peeta, and Finnick are quick to hide in the jungle to observe them. When they get closer, Finnick recognizes Johanna and runs excitedly towards her. Katniss and Peeta join him. Johanna is with Wiress and Beetee.

Apparently, the rain that fell earlier in the distance wasn’t rain at all but blood. Johanna’s ally from her district, Blight, tried to run from the blood but ran right into the force-field and passed away. Johanna was left alone with Beetee and Wiress. Wiress is injured after being stabbed, and Beetee just walks around in shock.

Katniss and Peeta take Beetee and Wiress to their beach camp. Johanna comes along too. They take a closer look at Beetee’s wound which isn’t too deep, but long. Using moss and vines, Katniss creates a make-shift bandage for his wound. Katniss then cares for Wiress by cleaning off her clothing.

Johanna and Katniss stay up on watch while the others fall asleep. Katniss tells Johanna what happened to Mags; she sacrificed herself for the survival of Finnick and the group. Johanna reveals that Mags was like family to Finnick and also his mentor. She also reveals that Haymitch made it clear to her that if she wanted to be on Katniss’ team then she had to help Beetee and Wiress survive too.

Wiress stirs awake and Johanna heads out to get some shut-eye. All that Wiress has been stating is “tick tock,” and she continues doing so until Katniss gets her to go back to sleep. Katniss then begins to put things together.

Katniss realizes that the giant dome is kind of like a giant clock. In each section, when the clock reaches its hour than something happens there. There’s lightening and blood rain at the twelve o’clock section (thus the twelve gongs before the rain begins), there’s poisoned fog in the two to three o’clock section, there’s attacking monkeys in the three to four o’clock section, and there’s a tidal way in the tenth section. Like clockwork, things happen at certain times throughout the map. The “tick tock” of Wiress makes perfect sense.
