  CATCHING FIRE -- CHAPTER 5
Katniss and Peeta are forced inside of the Justice Building by a group of Peacekeepers. Effie remarks on the gunshot, but Peeta dismisses it as a car backfiring. Unfortunately, more shots ring out and this time it’s apparent that the Peacekeepers are shooting outside.

Haymitch is quick to have Katniss and Peeta follow him. He has an uncanny knowledge of the building, even though he’s only been there once when he himself won the Games. He leads them to the dome of the building and there Katniss confesses everything to Peeta. Peeta is angered at the secrets between Katniss and Haymitch. He is especially upset at the idea that his generosity might lead to the execution of the families of Rue and Thresh.

Peeta lets his emotions get the best of him when he exclaims how much it bothered him that Haymitch ignored him at the Games until Katniss came along. Only when she was there with him in the Games did he get any type of outside help.

Haymitch confesses that he did elect to aid Katniss during the Games and he did not help Peeta. During most of the Games, Haymitch believed only one of the tributes would come out alive. Until the rules changed, he took advantage of Peeta’s undying support of Katniss. While Peeta was helping Katniss on the inside, Haymitch was helping her on the outside and so her chances of winning the Games were all that much stronger.

The three depart to get ready for the Games. Katniss takes a long shower and then gets ready with the help of her prep team and Cinna.

Before dinner, Effie comments on how poorly she’s been treated in District Eleven. She is anxious to leave to the next district.

Everybody lines up and moves onto dinner. Before they enter, Katniss and Peeta briefly discuss her kiss with Gale. She admits that they have only kissed once.

Next, the book experiences a summarization of events as Katniss fast-forwards through her experiences at the other districts during the Victory Tour. Most of the districts she visits are composed of the “cattle-like” crowd she is accustomed to in District Twelve. There are those districts, however, that seem to despise Katniss. During one encounter with an unhappy crowd, even the threats of Peacekeepers receive resistance from the crowd. Katniss understands now that her actions with the berries triggered this mess.

During the trip, Katniss begins having trouble sleeping. Her nightmares are more intense and even sleeping pills don’t seem to do the trick. Peeta begins sleeping with Katniss in her bed to comfort her.

Next, Katniss describes the difficulties she had going through in Districts One and Two. In District Two, she had to come eye to eye with the families of Cato and Clove. In District One, she had to face the families of Glimmer and Marvel (the boy who killed Rue with a spear). It’s not easy to face the families of those tributes who she killed or had a part in killing.

The tour finally makes its way to the Capitol. There, the people live privileged lives and they have no urge to rebel.

At the Training Center, Katniss suggests to Peeta that he propose to her before the crowds. That way, their love will seem all the more believable. Peeta reacts by approving to the idea vocally, but his actions speak for themselves (afterwards, he hides away in his room). When they are interviewed shortly after by Caesar Flickerman, Peeta proposes to Katniss and she says yes.

President Snow comes out to show his approval for the marriage and he gives his congrats to the couple. He shakes the hand of Peeta, gives Katniss a hug and gives a slight, disapproving head shake aimed at Katniss.
