  CATCHING FIRE -- CHAPTER 11
Katniss is trapped behind an electric fence. She’s been in this position before with Gale and they just waited it out until the fence was turned off. She knows that there’s no going under the fence since the ground is too frozen to dig through, so she decides that the only way to get to the other side is to go over the top of the fence.

She finds herself a tree with a branch that reaches over the fence. With a little bit of hesitation, Katniss climbs a limb that’s over the fence, and jumps to the ground. The only problem is that the drop is so high up that she injures herself in the fall. She can’t let anyone know where she has been, so she plans to lie and tell people that she fell when she was trying to fix up her old house’s roof. Before going home, she stops for some goods (bandages for her mom’s job and peppermints for Prim).

When she gets home she finds Peacekeepers there waiting for her. Haymitch and Peeta are there too. When asked by the Peacekeepers where she’s been, she tells them that she was looking for the Goat Man (Katniss’ family wants their goat to get pregnant). Prim had given her directions to where he lived, but Katniss plays it off as if Prim gave her the wrong directions. Haymitch and Peeta seem to know what is going on and they make a joke out of the whole getting lost façade. Katniss also pulls out the goods she picked up to further prove that she was out and about running errands.

The Peacekeepers have a message for Katniss. They let her know the fence will always be on now. This is information that she should pass onto Gale. The Peacekeepers exit and Katniss’ mom tends to her injuries.

Katniss is given sleep syrup to rest, and she asks Peeta to stick around until she nods off. Peeta reveals that he was worried that she had run away.

Katniss takes some time to recuperate from her injuries. Luckily, she has the ability to rest without fear of the Peacekeepers barging in and arresting her since they’re preoccupied with fixing the fence. They’re trying to make it so people can’t get under the fence.

During her period of rest, she works with Peeta to add notes and pictures to her family’s book of natural remedies and edible plants. With Peeta’s ability to draw and Katniss’ knowledge of plants, they create new pages that can be used by her family later.

At times, during Katniss’ period of recuperation, she watches television with Peeta. She watches, in particular, for the scene of District Thirteen that Twill and Bonnie spoke of. It’s a video of District Thirteen after it was destroyed by the Capitol. In it, a mockingjay supposedly always passes at the top of the screen with the same trajectory. Katniss finally watches the scene on television, but remains unconvinced by it.

Later, however, she watches a news report that is supposedly shot in District Thirteen. The news report is shot in front of District Thirteen’s demolished Justice Building. In the news report, a reporter on the scene in a safety suit describes the toxicity of the area. During the report, Katniss observes the same mockingjay moving in the same trajectory as the bird in the old video. She then realizes that the old footage has been tweaked to create this current news report. Something is pretty fishy here.
