  CATCHING FIRE -- CHAPTER 1
Katniss is drinking a cup of cold tea in the forest as she explains the details of what is going to happen today. Today, the Victory Tour begins and because of it a bunch of people will be visiting her at the Victor’s Village. During the tour, she will be forced to go to each district to showcase her win of the Hunger Games nearly half a year ago. Although parades are usually celebratory, she is not looking forward to it.

Katniss is in the forest because she has taken up the job of hunting for Gale Hawthorne’s family since he now works in the coal mines. Katniss reminisces about how anxious she would get during her days at school when they use to take a field trip into the mines. This anxiety only grew after her father’s death in a mine explosion.

Katniss then explains how she hunts for Gale’s family since he won’t accept money from her. Winning the Hunger Games has made her quite wealthy, yet he has too much pride to accept her monetary support.

Katniss gathers the game she’s trapped, wiggles under an electric fence (it separates the forest from the Meadow), and returns to her original house where she once lived. She no longer lives in her old house. Now, she is famous and lives with her family in Victor’s Village. She dislikes her fame since she is now in the spotlight and since she now is despised by the Capitol for winning the Games in an unsatisfactory manner.

Katniss stops by at Gale’s house to drop off the game with Hazelle, Gale’s mother. Katniss admires Hazelle for working so hard at washing other people’s laundry for money. Hazelle’s husband also died in the mine explosion that killed Katniss’ dad. Through Hazelle’s hard work she’s been able to make sure her family survives.

Hazelle makes Katniss feel embarrassed when she remarks that Gale likes to spend his only free day off, Sunday, with Katniss in the woods. Katniss explains to the readers how complicated her love life is now. Even though she didn’t know how she felt towards Peeta during the Games, she had to pretend that she was in love with him. Meanwhile, he really was in love with her. Soon, she will have to put the love-show on again when the two of them go on the Victory Tour.

Katniss leaves Hazelle and visits the Hob, an illegal trading post. She once relied on the Hob for her own family’s survival, so now she buys a lot there with her new-found wealth. In doing so, she is helping the merchants.

At the Hob, Katniss runs into Darius, a Peacekeeper, who jokes around with Katniss and reminds her that she should get going since she’ll be starting on the Victory Tour soon. Greasy Sal, a merchant, then asks Katniss if her “cousin” Gale is on the list of people who will be there to see her before she goes. Apparently, during the Hunger Games, the Capitol interviewed those who were close to Katniss including Gale. They deemed him her “cousin” in order to refrain from interfering with the love-story that was playing out between Katniss and Peeta.

Katniss heads back to the Victor’s Village where she first goes to Haymitch’s house. His house is incredibly smelly inside due to his poor job with keeping it clean. Inside his house, she finds him asleep. She makes a pot of coffee and then wakes him up by pouring water on him. Just as he awakens, Peeta comes in with fresh bread. Things are still awkward and cold between the two youths.

Katniss leaves Haymitch’s house to go home. Once at home she discovers a man from the Capitol who is waiting for her. The man has her follow him into a room where she finds none other than President Snow.
