  CATCHING FIRE -- CHAPTER 2
Katniss is shocked to see President Snow at her house. He normally is only seen in the Capitol. Katniss knows that his being there means trouble. She went against the Capitol by tricking them into allowing two people to win the Hunger Games and now she knows that she’s in for it.

President Snow begins by suggesting that the two of them stick to honesty in their conversation. He admits that he disagreed with the Head Gamemaker’s decision in letting both Katniss and Peeta win the Hunger Games; and so, he executed the Head Gamemaker. Now, the Capitol has been put in a bit of a predicament. They had to let the scenario with two victors continue; however, some people in other districts saw right through Katniss’ trickery and knew that she openly defied the Capitol without any punishment. President Snow fears that this open act of defiance could be the catalyst for rebellion.

Katniss’ mom interrupts the meeting to bring in tea and cookies for the president and Katniss. Katniss admits that she wasn’t trying to start anything, and she asks why the Capitol just didn’t kill her. The president admits that killing her, even “accidently,” would only trigger unrest among Panem’s citizens.

The president then reveals that he didn’t really think that Katniss was in love with Peeta during the Games. He then asks how Gale is doing, and he reveals his knowledge of Gale and her sneaking off to the woods on Gale’s day off. Katniss is in a frenzy of thoughts at the idea that the president knows what she’s been doing in the woods with Gale (hunting and gathering).

She flashbacks to a moment in which Gale kissed her in the woods. It happened after her return from the Games. The next week when she saw him again, they went about their business as if the kiss had never happened.

Katniss then realizes that the kiss and her relationship with Gale was careless. The Capitol has probably been watching her all the time, and now she has put herself, Gale, and all those close to the two of them in jeopardy.

Katniss asks President Snow not to harm Gale. The president remarks that he is afraid of how her relationship with Gale impacts her relationship with Peeta. He needs her to make her “love” for Peeta seem real during the Victory Tour to help the people believe that she truly cares for him. Most of all, the president explains, that she must make him believe that she loves Peeta.

President Snow then leaves the house, but not without making it clear that he knows that she and Gale kissed in the woods.
