  CATCHING FIRE -- CHAPTER 16
Haymitch grabs onto Katniss in case she decides to go towards Darius. She realizes, however, they she must not make a scene out of this since any attention directed at Darius could threaten his life. Katniss feels guilty for what has happened to her old friend. As an Avox now, he is left to a life as a servant who cannot talk (the Capitol removes the tongues of Avoxes so they cannot speak).

Katniss goes to her room for a bit to sulk in a bit of unhappiness, and then Effie comes to grab her for dinner. During dinner, Katniss spills a plate of peas onto the floor on purpose and she tries to clean it up as Darius does the same. She grabs his fingers for a moment just to acknowledge him and to speak to him through her touch.

Next, the group sits around to watch a video of the opening ceremonies. Katniss cannot help to notice how the older, weaker tributes look ridiculous in their getups.

After an uncomfortable night filled with nightmares of cut tongues and a blood-thirsty President Snow, Katniss goes down for breakfast. She’s welcomed by Peeta and Haymitch. They must go down soon to train and Haymitch suggests that they continue their love routine and that they get to know people.

Haymitch goes as far as to say that they should join the group of Career Tributes. Katniss remembers how much she despised the Careers, but she also knows that for the Quarter Quell this group of tributes is going in already knowing each other as friends.

Haymitch believes they should team up with Chaff and Seeder, since he knows them well.

Katniss and Peeta make their way to the training area only to find that only two tributes are there, Brutus and Enobaria. Enobaria is well known for killing an opponent with her teeth, which she has since then had sharpened into fangs.

Later, half of the other tributes arrive and the training officially begins.

Katniss convinces Peeta that they should go to different training stations to attain more knowledge between the two of them. Peeta agrees and he heads off to throw spears, while Katniss heads off to tie knots.

Katniss leaves the knot tying station when Finnick gets there, and she goes over to the fire-starting station to figure out how to start a fire without matches. She is soon joined by the tributes from District Three, Wiress and Beetee. The two from District Three get to talking about their inventions. Katniss jumps in at the chance to smoothly change the subject of the conversation into the rumored uprising that occurred in their district. The two from District Three then indirectly hint at the fact that there was a rebellion in their district.

When Katniss and her new found friends move onto another station, Wiress points out the force field that now separates the Gamemakers in the stands above from the tributes down below. There’s a “chink,” as Beetee calls it, in the force field where they are able to visibly see its ripples.

Later, the tributes meet up for lunch. At first, Katniss wants to eat with the District Three tributes, but when the tributes put all the smaller tables together to form one giant table, Katniss is forced to eat with all of them.

When Peeta and Katniss get a chance alone, Peeta reveals that the District Three tributes have a nickname, “Nuts and Volts.” They are apparently teased by the other tributes and looked down upon. Katniss, nonetheless, really wants them within their group. Peeta also encourages for them to have Chaff and Seeder in their group.

Lunch soon ends and Katniss begins training again. At the insect training station, she learns of bugs she can eat with Cecelia and Woof from District Eight. She next builds hammocks with the tributes from District One, Cashmere and Gloss. At the center for swords she works with Enobaria, and during fishing training she works alongside Finnick and Mags from District Four.

Katniss finally moves to her favorite station, archery. The trainer there challenges her by throwing several fake birds in the air at the same time for her to hit with arrows. After a bit, Katniss notices that the other tributes are watching her as she practices.

Before dinner, Haymitch lets Katniss know that many people want to team up with her during the Quell. Peeta figure it’s because they saw her train with bows and arrows.

Two days pass as Katniss continues training. She works with other tributes, exchanging tips with them, and getting to know them better. Eventually, the last day of training comes along. On this day, the tributes must showcase their talent before the Gamemakers who will then give them a score. The higher the score, the better the Gamemakers think that the tribute will do in the Quell.

Peeta goes into be judged and then later Katniss goes in for her turn. The Gamemakers do not look happy when she enters and she wonders what Peeta did to anger them.

Katniss does something to really get the Gamemakers’ attention. Using a knot she’s learned to make, she hangs a target dummy, and using camouflage paint she writes “Seneca Crane” onto the dummy. Seneca was the old Head Gamemaker who chose to allow both Katniss and Peeta to win last year’s Hunger Games.
