  CATCHING FIRE -- CHAPTER 24
In the jungle Katniss finds the creature that made the screaming sound that sounded so much like her sister. It is a jabberjay. Katniss kills the Gamemakers’ creation with an arrow. They have tricked her.

Katniss returns to her allies only to have Finnick run off next, after another jabberjay that sounds like somebody close to him. Katniss follows him and takes out the jabberjay that squawks in the voice of his loved one, Annie. Finnick realizes that the Gamemakers are using the jabberjays, the mutts (short for “muttations”), against them. Katniss and Finnick also realize that the Capitol must have had these sounds recorded somehow, and Katniss fears that the Capitol forced their loved ones to make these alarming noises.

Katniss hears Gale in the distance, but Finnick stops her from going after him. She comes to her senses, realizing it’s just a jabberjay.

The two try to return to the others. They, however, can’t get to them since some kind of invisible wall encloses them within the area until the hour passes. The two must endure the unceasing sound of the jabberjays until finally it ends and they are reunited with their group.

Peeta holds Katniss. She’s afraid that the Capitol made her sister scream out by torturing her, thus giving the jabberjays horrible sounds to record and repeat. Peeta assures her that the Capitol cannot have harmed Prim since if Katniss were to win they would need to interview her little sister. Beetee confirms that the Capitol could have just mimicked her voice. Johanna stunningly and bluntly states that if Prim was killed by the Capitol then a rebellion would ensue. Prim is apparently a jewel of Panem. Katniss is stunned at Johanna’s open-talk of rebellion.

The group takes a moment to recuperate. Their attention is all taken up by a hovercraft in the distance that begins picking up the remains of tributes who were somehow killed in the six o’clock area. Now, the only tributes that still stand are those in Katniss’ party, Chaff, and the tributes from District Two.

The group, next, decides to take shelter on the ten o’clock beach after the giant wave passes over it. They are lucky enough to have bread from Beetee’s district that parachuted down to them. Nearby in the jungle, the group hears clicks and they hope it isn’t some kind of animal that will come get them, but fortunately nothing happens.

While the others sleep, Katniss and Peeta stay up on guard. The two talk about their conversations with Haymitch prior to the Games. It seems that Haymitch promised each of them the similar things: he promised Peeta that he would help him save Katniss, and he promised Katniss that he would help her save Peeta. Katniss is sure that Haymitch lied to Peeta.

Peeta tries to convince Katniss that his life would be pointless if she were to die in the Quarter Quell; consequently, between the two of them, he believes she should be the one that survives. Peeta reminds Katniss of what she has back home. He even reveals a hidden compartment in his golden mockingjay locket, which hides pictures of Gale and Prim. Katniss knows that Peeta is being sincere, and she finally feels real feelings stirring inside of her for Peeta.

Her feelings are squelched by a bolt of lightning which strikes a tree at midnight and wakes up Finnick. He says that he can stay up on guard now, but Peeta volunteers to continue being on the lookout while everybody sleeps. Katniss decides she needs rest. Before she drifts off, she wonders how the world would be if they had more freedoms.
