Peeta eventually wakes up and he tries to convince the group to kill him. He’s overcome with grief after he led to the death of one of the members of the squad. The group, Finnick especially, tries to place the blame of his actions on the Capitol. It was the Capitol, after all, that captured Peeta and brainwashed him.

Peeta, nonetheless, realizes that he is a threat to the group. He begs to be given a poison pill that he can store and use if he ever feels himself going haywire. The other group members have a poison nightlock pill that they can use if necessary and Peeta wants one too.

Katniss changes the subject and mentions the fact that they need food. Messalla is familiar with the type of apartment they’re in and he’s able to find them some food that’s hidden away.

Katniss finds herself a can of cod soup, and she’s ready to open it when Peeta gives her a can of lamb stew. Lamb stew was once one of Katniss’ favorites. She especially enjoyed it when it was parachuted down to her and Peeta during their first Hunger Games.

The group is enjoying desert when the television in the apartment blazes on. The Capitol announces the names of the well-known rebels who were supposedly killed in the black goo attack.

President Snow attempts to close the broadcast by announcing the death of Katniss. His transmission, however, is interrupted when President Coin steals the airwaves for a moment. She gives a speech that both praises Katniss and inspires the rebels to fight with her in mind.

After the broadcast, the squad ponders their next move. They can push forward and face new, dangerous pods or they can retreat. They choose to go forward through the safest route, through tunnels beneath the city.

Before they leave the apartment the squad faces two small problems. Firstly, Peeta refuses to go with them. Secondly, the camera crew cannot fit through the entrance to the tunnels with their bulky camera suits. Fortunately, Peeta is eventually convinced to go with them. They also remove the insect-shaped cameras and leave them behind in a closet.

The group relies on Pollux’s knowledge of the tunnels. He leads them through the Transfer, the main tunnels that lie directly below the streets, and through the other confusing tunnels before them.

Eventually, the group takes a break in a machine-filled room. It has to be a short break since the Capitol will surely soon discover that they are still alive. They take time to sleep while others stay up on watch.

During Katniss’ watch, she speaks to Peeta a bit. Peeta is beginning to be able to tell the difference between what was implanted in his head and what is real. Katniss comforts him a bit by touching his hair and Peeta realizes that she’s looking out for him.

When the group awakens and is getting ready to leave a strange whispering sound echoes through the tunnel. The sound comes together to form Katniss’ name.
