Katniss begins the chapter by describing the extent of her injuries. Peeta could have killed her with the way he choked her. Luckily, she has so no permanent damage. Boggs was able to take down Peeta when he choked her.

Now, Katniss must lie in a hospital with Prim nearly always by her side as she heals up.

Beetee figures out that the Capitol must have hijacked Peeta. Hijacking is a form of abuse in which the Capitol injects a person with tracker jacker venom to manipulate their thoughts. Katniss was stung by tracker jackers in her first Hunger Games, so she understands the impact that their venom can have on a person. The venom can toy with a person’s memories, and so Beetee believes that the Capitol used the venom to manipulate Peeta’s memories of Katniss. Now, they can only hope that the specialists of District Thirteen can help to bring the old Peeta back.

Katniss slowly gets better. As she recovers, she holds onto the thought of killing President Snow.

After a while, Katniss is able to leave the hospital. She now will live with her family in a new compartment since the old compartment was probably damaged in the Capitol’s attack. There, Prim soothes her with optimistic thoughts about the fate of Peeta. Peeta is still being treated by the specialists in the hospital.

Eventually, Prim leaves for the hospital and Katniss also leaves to Special Defense. At Special Defense she finds Beetee and Gale working together. Both men have been working together to create mechanized traps to set for their enemies. These traps would be perfect to use to booby-trap areas that their enemies need to get to, like areas with water and food. The plan is to use these traps to make the enemy feel unsafe and to plant fear into them.

Katniss is hesitant in accepting the cruel, inhumane ways that the group is thinking of setting up these traps, but she doesn’t have much time to describe her reasoning since Haymitch comes to grab her. She is to go to the hospital to observe something they’re going to try on Peeta: allowing him to see people from District Twelve.

Peeta is going to be seeing harmless people who he should recall from back home. The first subject is Delly Cartwright, the daughter of the shoe repairers from District Twelve. She is a happy-go-lucky person who despite losing her parents is still very cheerful.

The experiment proceeds and Delly enters the room with a restrained Peeta. She introduces herself and Peeta recognizes her. They talk about their whereabouts. Delly tries her best to avoid the subject of Katniss or District Twelve but Peeta starts fishing for answers on what happened to his home and his family. He grows more and more agitated as he speaks of the destruction of District Twelve. Delly tries to calm him with no success. Peeta believes that Katniss was created by the Capitol to bring destruction to their district. He thinks that Katniss is a muttation or a mutt.

Katniss is so shaken up by the experience that she asks to get out of District Thirteen and go to District Two where the last of the fighting is taking place. She needs something to distract her from Peeta’s accusations.
