The next day, Gale can’t make it out to their usual hunting excursion so Katniss brings Finnick instead. They find a private moment to speak about what they heard Peeta say. Surprisingly, nobody else has made any mention of Peeta’s interview. Later, Katniss even tries to sneak out knowledge from Gale about the interview, but he also seems to have no idea of the interview.

Katniss is haunted by Peeta’s words and cannot sleep that night. She doesn’t know why nobody is talking about it, and she doesn’t know if Peeta was forced to say those things or not. Over it, she’s concerned about Peeta’s well-being and she feels guilty for not being able to save him from the Capitol.

The next morning, Katniss has breakfast with Gale. He has his communicuff back. With the sight of the communicuff and Gale’s cooperation with District Thirteen, Katniss convinces herself that Gale knows of Peeta’s interview. Over it, he has yet to discuss it with her.

Katniss throws an angry, silent tantrum and runs off. Gale follows and he admits that he didn’t tell her about Peeta’s interview because he didn’t want to upset her. Katniss is upset about his deception and she lets him have it. He becomes angry and takes off.

She comes across Gale again shortly in a hovercraft. Today, Cressida is taking them back into District Twelve for more camera shoots. On the hovercraft, Plutarch boasts about the rebels winning control over Districts Three and Eleven. They are making progress.

Eventually, they make it to their old home district. Katniss is stunned to see that Haymitch didn’t join them on this trip since he is too hurt by the destruction of his home. Katniss, soon, experiences the same hurt.

The filming begins at Katniss’ old home where they spend little time. Gale spends much time at his old home.

Next, they move onto the lake in the forest where Katniss once spent much time. She wishes she were alone. Gale is silent during his time there. He is apparently very hurt at everything he has encountered in the remains of District Twelve.

They break for food. As they eat, Katniss notices a mockingjay. Katniss and Pollux have it repeat a tune. The singing mockingjay attracts more birds that gather around them. Pollux asks Katniss to sing and she instinctively sings the short tune that Rue taught her. The mockingjays repeat it and the tune causes the environment to grow even more somber.

Katniss, hoping to alter the somber mood, begins to sing a song called “The Hanging Tree.” The mockingjays are silent to Katniss’ beautiful voice. The song was taught to her by her father, but her mother was displeased with it so Katniss was forbidden to sing it. It’s a somber, twisted song about a couple who can only experience freedom by killing themselves. Once Katniss stops singing, the mockingjays finally begin mimicking the tune.

The entourage next move onto the place where Katniss and Gale would meet up to go hunting together. They sit together and speak of their hunting days to the camera.

Next, the group makes their way to the remains of the bakery that Peeta’s family once operated. She asks the cameramen to film her as she questions Peeta directly. She questions his inability to understand that a ceasefire is not the correct course of action—the Capitol, after all, has destroyed Peeta’s family’s very lives and livelihood.

Eventually, Katniss moves on her own to her old house in the Victor’s Village where she wants to gather things. As she’s rummaging around, Gale shows up and he heads over to the spot where the two of them shared a kiss. Gale reflects upon their kiss together, and Katniss reacts by kissing Gale again.

Before long, the group heads back to District Thirteen. There, Katniss is quick to go to bed.

The next day, she hides away in a closet where she sleeps. Eventually, Boggs bumps into her when she is returning to the closet after getting a bite to eat. He directs her to Command for a meeting.

  MOCKINGJAY -- CHAPTER 9
Before long, Katniss and the others are in the Command watching President Snow give a speech. In his speech, he’s going over the destruction supposedly caused by rebels. His speech, however, is interrupted by a District Thirteen propo. Somehow, Beetee has been able to hack the Capitol’s system to deliver his own message. The message is short-lived as the Capitol’s people take control back of their system. After a while, though, Beetee is able to regain control and show another clip. This back-and-forth dance between Beetee’s control of the system and the Capitol’s control of the system continues for some time. Beetee keeps on airing quick snippets of propos and the Capitol keeps coming back with President Snow and Peeta speaking.

Eventually, Snow is back on the screen and he asks Peeta to give Katniss his final words. Peeta says that they need to stop the fighting before everybody dies. The screen continues flashing as Beetee continues his onslaught on the Capitol’s signal. The last thing that is seen and heard in the Capitol is the camera falling, Peeta screaming a warning out to District Thirteen, and blood splattering.
