Katniss is shocked to learn that she will not be part of the group that is going to invade the Capitol. She has not attended training sessions and is not physically or mentally ready to be part of the attack. Katniss reacts with great sourness and demands to go with them. Boggs points out that she ended up injured during the few times she did go with them to different districts. They don’t want to risk her injury again.

Katniss talks Coin into letting her train during these few weeks prior to the attack. If she trains enough during these three weeks, maybe she’ll be allowed to go with them into the Capitol.

Johanna also receives word that she will not be allowed to go to the Capitol, and she becomes frustrated too. Katniss insists that she trains too so that maybe they’ll both be allowed to go.

The next day when they go to training, Katniss doesn’t do too well because of her bruised ribs. A note from the trainer, though, qualifies her to get a quick but painful healing treatment at the hospital.

Katniss is still suffering from the consequences of her rib treatment, a painful burning, when she returns with Johanna to training. Katniss does pretty well as they train; but, Johanna isn’t doing so well since she has stopped using morphling cold turkey. Katniss has to help Johanna at times since her shaking is so bad.

Katniss and Johanna are beginning to bond a bit, and Katniss decides to bunk with Johanna in a normal compartment. Johanna has been stuck in the hospital where she can be looked after since she is a morphling addict. The only way out of the hospital for Johanna is a roommate who can care for her. Katniss has stepped to the plate, so they are both given a compartment to live in.

During their first night living together, Johanna points out how the Hunger Games and the Quarter Quell changed all its contestants. In fact, the two of them are now even living peacefully together instead of potentially killing each other.

Katniss’ week goes by with more and more improvement in training as her ribs also quickly heal. Johanna, likewise, is beginning to see vast improvement from her morphling withdrawal

At the end of the week, Katniss and Johanna join a pair of friendly faces for dinner. Finnick is there with Annie, and he’s glowing with happiness after getting married to her. Delly is there too. Katniss has grown fond of her since she’s genuine, and since she’s been working to help undo Peeta’s brainwashing.

Katniss is enjoying her meal when, unexpectedly, Peeta shows up in shackles, escorted by guards. He asks to sit with them and he joins their group. Johanna makes a wisecrack on how she and Peeta once roomed near each other at the Capitol. Annie doesn’t respond too well to the wisecrack, and before long Finnick decides to leave with her. Peeta makes a rude wisecrack of his own directed at Annie and Finnick as they leave.

Delly is quick to indirectly point out to Peeta that he should treat Finnick with more respect since Finnick saved his life a few times. This causes Peeta to retort that Finnick had his own intentions for saving him, none of which were for the sake of Peeta himself but for the sake of Annie and the rebellion. Peeta makes it clear that he believes he was used as a pawn during the Hunger Games and the Quarter Quell.

Eventually, Gale has had enough and he asks Katniss to leave with him. They both exit, and Gale escorts Katniss back to her compartment. He reassures her that Peeta is wrong about her.

Later, Johanna comes into the compartment and lets Katniss know that Delly ended up arguing with Peeta about his rude behavior at dinner. Peeta then ended up arguing with his alter-ego, yelling at himself, before the guards took him off.

Johanna next explains to Katniss that when she was locked up in the Capitol near Peeta’s cell, she heard Peeta yelling out for hours on end. With his screams in mind, Katniss has a restless night.
